the existence of the human species is optional.
if people don't want to care if their own species becomes extinct, well i guess that's what that is.
climate change is just the most visible tip of the environmental iceberg.
simple but all the more difficult for being, well, simple to say, not so much simple for these things to happen.
energy, transportation and population. three things that are too popular to do wrong.
but are well within the capability to do right. some things are transitioning, but most people still have and reinforce this backward notion that more population would be better.
its built into more then one religion, which may have made sense at the time when each of them were new, when the world was big and wild and scary and there wasn't as much infrastructure,
or enough of themselves to make of it a thing that would ease the burdens of survival. but those days are very ancient now, and our sheer numbers is itself one of the greatest perils we face,
and the multiplier times any and all of the rest of them.
the facts aren't that complicated, but there's no end to reasons people can come up with to not want to face them.
well so it goes, the universe owes noting to our egos nor the unwillingness of them to accept unpopular realities.
no one is just making them up. again if people would rather impress each other with stupid stuff, that to prevent the extinction of their own species, i guess that's just humanity's own problem.

(and as for so called "human condition", the only real "human condition" is a kind of collective hypochondria)

No. I'm an idiot. If I've had an original idea or insight in the past 61 years, I can't recall it. Everything that I think that I know, I've learned from others; most of which were demonstrably smarter than I.

Here's my unoriginal idea, courtesy of James Havelock, who posited the 'Gaia Hypothosis' way back when. I think that it's every bit as efficacious at changing the trajectory of climate change as all of the previous suggestions.
    • Do not do anything to harm the ecosystem (non-harming, "ahimsa"; also a non-original notion, probably 2,500 years old or so).
    • While Gandhi's maxim that right action is it's own intrinsic reward (also unoriginal; see above), understand that your actions to save the planet, while of meritorious and laudable intent, at this point amount to little more than rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
    • Enjoy your life to the extent which you can over the next 20 years or so. Beyond that, inevitable apocalypse. Choices were collectively made by humanity long ago which set processes in motion which cannot now be undone by buying a Tesla.
    • All things are conditional, and therefore impermanent. We have willfully eliminated the causes and conditions which gave rise to and supported the stable, mild climate of the Holocene for 11,500 years. The inevitable collective karma of that is the Anthropocene Mass Extinction Event, which has already begun and is accelerating. Humanity is on the verge of discovering that on at least one account, Malthus was right.

    1. Stay home today... plant a tree and work in the garden.

    2. Do the same thing tomorrow...

    3. don't get anyone pregnant.

if everyone left the planet, problem solved. there are reasons this won't happen. (reduced human birthrate can)

(the only way some of us could ever do number one, would be if land were not a possession. love the idea though.

many cities have been abondond, and the descendents of their residents are still very much alive and with us, while those cities have turned to dust, so that much is possible.)

Please stop mentioning obvious stuff that goes without saying. You're adding nothing to the discussion.

As I already said in the original post, I intend for this thread to be about ideas that one isn't likely to have thought of before... like the ones I wrote about that you probably didn't bother to read.

Purchase a failed pretentious Highstreet superstore for everyone to deliver recycling to for rewards on personal recycling loyalty cards. Each load is organised in to respected commodities and weighed while customers use hotspots and free wifi as they wait in a dining area (or pub?) until the weight of each commodity is converted to roughly the same as the current market spot price. The idea is that each customer saves these rewards until they are big enough to really cash in. The way I see it is that greed can undo pollution just as fast as it has caused it.
