I've had a 69 and a 71 VW camper. My advice would be if you know how to work on them go for it. They require alot of upkead. They're way bitchin' but if you can afford something newer and more reliable get that. Of course if this is just an extra car for fun then go for it.
A good friend of mine has one. I wanted one until I saw how often his broke down, even after he put a ton of work into it. On the days it DID work, we would drive around blaring Frank Zappa and getting weird looks. We even took it to a high school football game once, and when it rained he didn't want to drive until it eased up so we layed on the bed while blaring Beach Boys and got lots of weird looks from the jocks and reminicing looks from their parents. ^_^ I just want a convertable Beetle now.
im buying a van....... i know TONS of busses on the road.... hit up a rainbow gathering if you want ideas..
I myself dont own one but my mate has just got one for his 18th, pretty sweet he's gonna paint it all up really trippy ill post a before and after pic when its finished
Try the luxury automobile issues of Auto Trader! Wanna know something weird though? I've seen an actual copy of The Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo. A guy down my street has two VW campers he keeps, One is dark green and the other is brown. They both have fresh paint. But geez, the colors ...........ick. I'd paint mine hot purple and lime green!!! @_@!!! Anywho, when my clan gets our ride, I'm designing the custom paint! It's gonna be sooooooo hot.
I really want one to and my mom said she would buy me one and that buying it isnt the problem its the insurance and fixing it, so I was thing of taking a mechanics course or something
You should just try finding a friend in the auto fixing job with a good reputation who can give you a nice discount. I know this guy Tony who does, but I haven't seen him in forever . Just try for the best QUALITY discount. You don't want to fuck your car up more than it already may be. Either that, or buy something else. Maybe you can get a mini school bus and strip the yellow paint! That's what I'm thinking could be a good possibility. Or, get an RV......now getting expensive . Surely you can find some brilliant idea!!!!!
I bought a red and white 1971 VW camper in 1979 to have cheap transportation and a place to sleep while camping in Cape Hatteras. And,also, for transporting my 90 lb white German Shepperd named Spirit...
My boyfriend and I used to have 1. It was a '76 Econoline. Actually, the old owners of it were hippies too so it was pretty cool. We painted it inside with a cloud theme and now, because it is such a gas guzzler it has been sitting forever- I am actually going to sell it for like 50 bucks or trade it for something really cool because I don't know how much work it needs and don't wanna rip anyone off or whatever...
to the younger peeps interested in older vw's, especially the bus's. remember things were much slower back in the day, especially the speed limits. most of the younger crowd wants to hurry hurry. the bus was rated for 45 mph average cruising speed with a 55 mph top recommended speed, before the mid 70's models came out. 77-79 could be cruised at 70 mph. going with a taller tire size will reduce the top end rpm to be able to cruise a little faster, but will cause horse power loss, which the bus was born lacking in the first place. bugs rating was 55 mph, but with a little taller tire can be brought up to an 80 mph cruiser, especially if you "drop in" a bus tranny from 72-75, 73 being the best for ratio, like i did on my 71 baja. but YOU MUST UPGRADE THE BRAKES!!!! fast is definitely not a good thing if you can't stop it!!! maintenance is simple to me, but most people want to just drive and go. there have been aftermarket products such as electronic ignition, which eliminates the biggest problem most people have with points adjustment. get the book "vw for idiots" and if you can read and understand at a 3rd grade level, you can do most of the work on any vw yourself. #1 RULE> never let an american auto mechanic touch your vw, you'd be better off with a lawnmower mechanic!. parts are way cheaper than most other vehicles also. if anyone needs some help with deciding on buying an old aircooled vw, feel free to hit me up, i'll tell you what to look for, but in most cases almost all are savable. peace, love and happiness, astro
wayfaringstarnger used to have a bus, and i think he knows a pretty good amount of info on fixing em and buying em................
I don't own a bus/van. But i really want a baja bug. I love to be out in the middle of no where just tearing up mud and not caring whether or not I'm dirty. Whatever you buy have fun with it. A car is lika an animal and will respond better when treated with love. :H peace-out
yea....when i think of all the work thats gonna go into it makes me feel like i dont want it. i'll get one eventually but maybe now ill settle for a small bus/van.....that im still gonna paint. i really just wanted to travel and live in it......oh well. hmmm....is anyone out there a mechanic and wanna date me? that way i can have a handy BF and an awesome set o' wheels. heehee
