What are your favorite indie bands?... as a musician, I have a lot of respect for people like Ani DiFranco, and all, but there are bands that people have never heard of such as http://www.uncleshaker.us and http://www.erinsmithband.com and omg... Vincent Foss from Uncle Shaker sounds so much like Neil Young during the Harvest era that it's almost unbelievable. They're from Somerville, Massachusetts.
I saw Ani DiFranco at Bonnaroo last year. The show was amazing. Ani is probably one of the best that I know if.
That's no contest for me. Guided by Voices. IMO, they practically invented Indie Rock. To record albums in your basement for almost ten years, never expecting anyone to hear them, I just love that. That’s honest music. Robert Pollard’s been doing his own thing since he started, and probably has more material than any other songwriter, ever. And I love his style, almost like music for people with ADD.
Most of the groups I like are independent (i.e. not beholden to a major record label), but aren't necessarily "indie rock". Man, I can't stand that genre tag... Art Zoyd, CAN, :Zoviet*France, Rapoon, Escapade, Bardo Pond, Shpongle, Tortoise, Surface of Eceon, Ozric Tentacles, etc.
