I'm taking a stab at tie dyeing tomorrow, and it's my first try. I bought a kit in a local craft store this afternoon and I think I know what I'm doing, but I just have one question. This might sound stupid, but when I'm through, how do I safely get rid of the soda ash and dye solutions? The directions that came in the box pretty much say to keep everything and just use it up until it's gone, but I don't know how much of the stuff I'm even going to need. I'm concerned that this stuff might not be safe to simply pour down a drain. Does anyone know? Thank you all in advance.
if its just a bit of dye, pour it all in a coffe can or similar, disposable container and leave it open to dehydrate. Next Hazmat day, take it down. really small amounts if dye, less than a cup, could go down the loo. soda ash is fine (if you are using the soda ash soak method, which I reccomend.) Soda ash is a laundry aid. I have poured it in the loo and scrubbed it then flush. good cleaner, too. I built a sand trap at one house, but the blues proved problematic. www.tiedyepaul.com
It won't hurt to dump it down the drain or toilet. Just be careful, it is dye. Last time I did this I ended up dying the sink.... So if you do it that wat make sure you have some bleach close at hand for splashes.. I just found this tie dye forum... http://tie-dyed.net/forum/
you do know it is very toxic and has heavy metals, right? black water line, not greywater. treat it like human excrement IN SMALL AMOUNTS.
