I'm gonna make my own clothes bitches!

cuz that's the cool thing to do. i've looked at some of the things posted here and they're just so great and creative, it's making me want to do this even more. once I actually get good at it I'm gonna have some fuckin cool shit. i've actually got sketches of what I want to make already. so i figure once i know what i'm doing i'll have no problem with it. of course i'll need money first, i dont have a sewing maching or anything yet. but i have used one so i'm not totally lost.

what i want to know is what is the best way to learn? i plan on getting some patterns at first and just have my grandma help me with it. maybe get a book too and basically just teach myself and if i need a pointer or two i've got it.

you never know, one day i'll be walking around in some cool ass pants and some fashion dude could stop me and make me rich! =D

 

I agree, the mamas here are very creative and inspiring. There is a book called Threads for heads (although Im sure you've seen the thread already) which is great for beginners and I've seen it on ebay for $20.

it probably has something to do with the different impressions it gives individuals. like, i love hearing 'bitches' after statments because i associate it with humor and fun. but i could see my parents, for example, thinking it was vulgar or something.

I would say grab the threads for heads book just to get some basics, but from there just experiment. Don't start with patterns, because patterns are restrictive unless you're good at altering them, but i find they often make things a lot more confusing than they need to be. Although getting help from your grandma is cool, be sure to keep an open mind. My mom tried to teach me stuff, and she was very "by the book". Also, remember that trial and error is the beauty of mastering the art- if you don't you'll get dissapointed in yourself very easily. Good luck mama!

 

Yeah! Roll with it. It's art, you can look at it like a blank canvas, and fabric as the paint, so many different colors and patterns the possibilities are endless. That's how I started, Being inspired by other hip mama's, and now I'm un-stoppable. I'm in the middle of like 3 different projects right now, and just designed 2 more thing's lastnight that I can't wait to make reality.

I counted all my sketches and i have 87 items (tops, dresses and skirts) that i know i definitely want to make for myself...let alone the 40 others that i want to make for others. But damnit, i have no money. it sucks
