Trump thought US troops were in Ukraine in 2017, ex-ambassador says in book

    excerpt:

"At an Oval Office meeting with the then Ukrainian president, Petro Poroshenko, in 2017, Donald Trump asked his national security adviser if US troops were in Donbas, territory claimed by Russian-backed separatists, which Vladimir Putin last month used as pretext for a full and bloody invasion.

Describing the meeting in a new book, the then US ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, writes: “An affirmative answer to that question would have meant that the United States was in a shooting war with Russia.”

Yovanovitch adds: “I pondered whether it was better to interpret Trump’s question as suggesting that the commander-in-chief thought it possible that US troops were fighting Russia-led forces, or instead as an indicator that the president wasn’t clear which country was on the other side of the war against Ukraine.

“Either way, it was disconcerting that he did not seem to know where we had our troops – his troops – deployed. I could only imagine what the Ukrainians were thinking.”

Trump fired Yovanovitch in 2019, amid attempts to withhold military aid to Ukraine in return for political dirt on Joe Biden and other rivals, an affair which fueled Trump’s first impeachment."

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...annity-interview-ukraine-putin-2024-disaster/

    excerpt;

"Trump’s new interview with Sean Hannity shows what a disaster that could prove. Hannity practically pleaded with Trump to describe the situation with moral clarity, yet he largely demurred. At the same time, Trump claimed Putin would never dare invade in the face of Trump’s towering strength, and said Putin only acted now due to Biden’s weakness.

For Trump, it’s a measure of that weakness that Biden won’t threaten nuclear strikes. As Trump suggested, Biden should remind Putin that “we are a nuclear nation,” while advertising our ability to “wipe out Russia.”

All this is absurd: As many have noted, Putin understood that as president, Trump was carrying out his aim of weakening NATO and probably didn’t want to disrupt that. And Putin’s timeline was more likely influenced by Ukraine’s recent drift toward NATO under newly elected president Volodymyr Zelensky and other current domestic factors.

But beyond that, note Trump’s deep inability to conceptualize the situation as an extremely complicated and difficult one without easy or good options. And note his continuing contempt for the ongoing response, which is extraordinary to witness but involves rallying international alliances and doesn’t rely on maximal (and unilateral) displays of performative strength."

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...annity-interview-ukraine-putin-2024-disaster/

    excerpt:

"This is particularly galling at a moment when the invasion has revitalized NATO and the Western alliance and stirred hopes for a rehabilitated international order of sorts. Conservative writer Matt Lewis points out that former Trump advisers believe he might withdraw from NATO in a second term, and asks: “If Donald Trump gets reelected in 2024, is NATO toast?”

Obviously the international response has not been enough to dissuade Putin, and we don’t know if it will be enough. There are more things Biden can do. We may soon face the crushing realization that the international response has failed, and it’s unclear where we’ll be then.

But as of now, that response has defied expectations, and those gains might be imperiled by a President Trump in 2025. How would a reelected Trump handle various situations in the aftermath of this war, such as partial Putin control over Ukraine combined with ferocious ongoing resistance, or Putin widening the lens of conquest?

Trump sympathizers might note that his tough talk about threatening Russia with nuclear annihilation shows he’s on Ukraine’s side. But that doesn’t really tell us much. Opinion among Republican lawmakers is running strong against Putin: Most have condemned the invasion and support maximal efforts against it. Heck, even Hannity is prodding Trump to condemn Putin."

Trump supporters can find solace in Trump knowing that, when asked about what he'd do in the complicated situation of Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Trump whined about wind turbines.

They can find even more solace in Trump in knowing that, when asked how to withdraw troops better from Afghanistan, he said he couldn't answer because of campaign laws.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/03/11/trump-pac-new-orleans-contest-winner/

    excerpt:

“President Trump has awarded more than 100 prizes to contest winners across America, but due to an administrative error in this individual circumstance, the contest winner was not properly notified for last weekend’s event in New Orleans. Consistent with the rules of the sweepstakes, a substitute prize will be awarded to the winner,” Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich said Friday, when asked why no winner was chosen.

He did not say what the substitute prize was, but the fine print of the contest rules say the organization can substitute a prize of “greater or equal value.”

Those who enrolled in the Gold Elite program at Trump University received something even better: a photo with Trump (a cardboard cutout of Trump).

    excerpt:

"The session took place at a hotel on Manhattan's East Side. Guillo remembers signs in the hotel lobby that read, "This Way to Success." Inside the auditorium was a large cardboard cutout of Trump, and attendees had their picture taken alongside it."

Tucker Carlson actually tried to blame Putin's invasion of Ukraine on Biden.

Carlson says Biden made the invasion favorable to Putin so that fossil fuel prices would rise and Biden could promote renewable energy.

    excerpt:

"After signing up for the Gold Elite status, a kind of year-long program of mentoring sessions and educational seminars, Guillo says he realized pretty quickly that the information it provided was largely worthless. Attendees were told to use the real estate website Trulia.com to find properties, or to go to the website of the Internal Revenue Service, irs.gov, to learn about federal tax deductions, he says."

Gee--I wonder why he paid 25 million in order to keep from going to court to defend his Trump University?

Trump will spend tens of millions of his money trying to delay cases against him from going to trial.

Later, he finally settles when the trials begin and he is in jeopardy of losing (long after he could have settled and saved himself tens of millions).

I wouldn't say Carlson is a "moron." He's more of a white supremacist without a shred of decency who is cashing in on the demand for right-wing propaganda, and he's getting paid a lot of money to do so. I believe he's making somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million a year. He has the most popular show on Fox "news."

I'd never watched him before so last night I decided to take a look a a YouTube video of his show. It seemed like he was just trying to make lower-middle-class white people feel like victims. Everything he was saying was about liberals taking away their rights and hurting them economically. Granted, I only watched a few minutes. That was all I could stomach.

It's sad that there's a demand for that kind of thing. And pathetic.
