how can i do it?? my parents smoke cigs (ewwww!) and the smell ALWAYS gets embedding into my hair, and i HATE it! is there anything i can do to keep the nice shampoo-y smell in my hair, or are there any scents that smell awesome in hair/cover the cig smell well??
Nice smelling conditioner tends to stick around longer. Just to keep my hair smelling good (I'm obsessive about it), I always spray a little bit of good smelling hairspray or use a little bit of good smelling gel or smoothing balm in my hair, whether I need it or not. I'm not sure about covering up the smell, but I would think something like mint would cut through the smell. You could make your own spritz with some distilled water and a few drops of essential oil in a spray bottle.
I agree 200%. All your parents are doing is slowly killing themselves and you with their nasty habit. Unfortunately for you, there's nothing you can do about the smell until you move out. Until then, while you are stuck at your parents, I would buy candles, air fresheners, incense, and anything else possible so I wouldn't have to deal with that awful smell (and make them pay for it since its their fault you have to buy it) Or you could start leaving out stop-smoking pamphlets, turn up the anti-tobacco commercials really loud if one comes on, and basically annoy the piss outta them to quit.
Or just cough in their face every time they smoke. That's what I did when I was 8 (I also cried alot) whenever my mom smoked so she eventually quit because I told her that she was traumatising me. That might not be so effective for anyone out of grade school, but by making it clear that you do not like it, it could help. Or ask them to smoke outside if they insist on smoking.
I feel for you. My step dad smoked in the house while i was growing up. I shampooed my hair every morning and tried to let it dry on the way to school (obviously stylish lassies cannot do this) Patchouli hid a world of sins, too. I had incense in my room and an open window except for cold days.
i am not going to tell them to stop, its their life, im going to let them do what they want... this thread was not made for whether or not my parents should stop smoking.. i want ways to cover up the smell... but most of what you guys have listed i already do...
Try putting a few drops of patchouli oil in your hands and brushing it through your hair....not too much or your hair might appear oily though....
It may be their life, but if you don't want to be around it there's no harm in asking them to do it outside. You don't want to have to breathe that stuff in. It also will make the house stop stinking (which they probably have no idea of since they smoke).
i stay out of their way when they smoke... so thats not a huge deal, and they know it stinks up the house, and sometimes (over a long period) the tar builds up on the blinds and stuff.. it sucks... but oh well.. and they did used to smoke outside, when me and my sister and brother were littler, and she did stop smoking while pregnant... but they figure i (since im the only one of their kids living in the house right now) can stay out of their way while smoking.. and i do, i just go in my room and lite up some inscense or something..... but the crappiest part about it is how i smell.. but oh well.. not much i can do about it untill im eighteen...
i'm a dj and i hate to come home with smoke in my hair-- what i have found helps (not natural, though, sorry) is a good, shiny leave on conditioner or "defrizzer"-- coat your hair when wet. avoid smells until dry. then, rub a small amount of olive oil with a drop of your favourite essential oil (lavendar works well) over your dry hair. this should hold you.
ps. you can also put it in a spray bottle if you use an aneseptic eo but not if you choose, say, jasmine, b/c it will mold.
My Mom smokes, and I had the same problem too (until I moved out.) And as much as you'd like them to stop smoking, nothings going to work unless they want to do it. When I used to complain to my Mom, she'd tell me it was her house, she pays the bills, and she'll smoke if she wants to. (She was waaaay more sympathetic when I was younger, though, like in elementary school. SHe even used to smoke outside.) Anyway, check out beauty supply stores. I remember L'oreal used to make a spray for hair for covering up odors, like smoke and food. I haven't seen it in a while, so they might have taken it off the market, but I'm sure you can find something similar. I don't know about where you live, but the people who run the beauty supply shop around here will order stuff for you if they don't carry it. I've heard that if you sprinkle a TINY bit of baking soda in your hair, it helps. I've never tried it, because I have dark hair, so it would be too obvious. I've also tried just a spritz or 2 of Herbal Essences hair spray (the lightest hold available) and that really kept my hair smelling good, because their stuff is soo fragrant.
