know anyone like this? my college roommate proclaimed "meat is murder" but would eat around meat in the caf foods. animals died so she could throw them away... i'm not a total veggie but i minimize my consumption of animal products (in all forms). but her behaviour drove me crazy! am i alone? eta: she didn't eat vegetables except potatoes, hence the title.
I'm not a complete vegetarian, I do eat fish and sometimes chicken. The only reason i dont eat red meat is because i am convinced that cows and like mammals have a prolonged consciousness and can understand the concept of life and nature. A fish has a memory span of like 2 seconds so basically it just lives as blindly as a carrot. aNYhoq i do get upset sometimes at those who profess their humane ideals and completely do the opposite. Killing animals that can appreciate life is just sad
The only point in being vegetarian is that you don't kill animals or in anyway support people for doing so (like by buying meat). What she's doing is causing animal deaths, and using up landfill space. And disrespecting the animals\plants by wasting food. That is crazy.
Actually, researchers are learning that we have been shortchanging the abilities of fish. As the News-Telegraph (UK) reported, "If you thought fish were cold, wet creatures who forget everything in three seconds flat, think again. Scientists have found they are fast learners, carry mental maps around in their heads - and can retain memories for months." Anyway, I knew several "meat avoiders", as the industry parlance refers to them. Almost always, they were young females who wanted to lose weight or who simply did not like the taste of meat. Because they weren't technically vegetarians and held no moral/ethical beliefs about meat, they would do similar things: order meat dishes and pick around them, or get some meat product and barely nibble at it.
Sometimes vegetarians don't have a lot of choice but to pick around the meat. I always try and find someone who will take whatever meat is in my food so that it won't be wasted. (I am a firm believer in not wasting.) I am the only vegetarian in my entire family and when I eat dinner at anyone else's house, even with persistent reminding, they always seem to forget that I don't eat meat. Most of the time, they're fairly good about it and I can eat a little of what is served without having to pick around meat. If she only ate potatoes, how healthy was she? Did anyone attempt to introduce her to new foods? Also, was she just beginning vegetarianism? I know that when I first gave up meat, it took me awhile to get a healthy eating pattern because I went straight to what I knew, potatoes and junk food.
i haven't had contact with her for years. we basically didn't get along on any level. she was an odd duck, which was okay with me, but apparently i was not okay with her (she told me she hated me because i was too nice to her). this was the least of her problems but the one thing that just drove me crazy.
Umm, actually many people couldn't care less about the death of animals (I'm not one of them) but still don't eat meat for health reasons. I'm a vegan for all the reasons but I do know many people who don't eat meat for only one reason, whatever their reason is. I happen to agree with the statement that wasting food is bad but that doesn't mean I'm going to buy up all the beef on the market shelves for fear that some of it might get thrown away if it's not bought. Also when I was still eating dairy, I would be at a party and the only pizza that was ordered was a pepperoni. Well usually I would forego the pizza altogether but what the hell, I was at a party and very hungry. You can bet I peeled off the pepperoni though. Yes, I did try to find someone who would eat it instead but even if I hadn't I would have thrown it away. (oh no, I'm a waster) Sorry, but after 10 years of being a vegetarian just the thought of chewing on meat grosses me out. I think the ones that are wasting are the ones that feed an excessive amount of food to the animals to fatten them up just so people can eat them. That same extra amount of grain could be used to feed starving children. Well now I'm on a soapbox, which is where I usually try to stay away from but sometimes I get a little pissed off when people don't know what they are talking about.
