me and a few mates have agreed that life is getting shit ,so we came up with the idea of going for a big walk up the coast in summer (from yorkshire) visiting all the beaches on the way. we will be taking tents, loads of money, maps, cumpass and all the basics. what i want to know is : is the idea of some completely inexperienced travellers walking up the country a ridiculous idea that i should forget about OR do you think its a possible plan that we could acomplish with some hard work. i mean, i know its not going to be easy but with some carefull planning and will power ,WOTS TO STOP US? any advice/warnings from people who have done something similar would be appreciated
Ive walked the the west coast of scotland over 2 summers. First was the west highland way (Glasgow to Fort William) Second was Fort William to cape wrath. Both with the right maps is easy enough to not get lost. The hardest thing is planning where you will spend the nights, cos farmers will get angry if they find you in their fields at night. Id say totally go for it dude cos its lots of fun going. Ill warn you that the east coast is colder and windier. If you after beautiful beaches and stuff walk the west coast of scotland cos it is sooo gorgeous and theres lots of route to choose.
i havent specifically done anything like this, but i've done loads of things where i was having the same thoughts as you (is it a good idea etc.) and i went off and did them anyway. the most important thing i discovered is that generally the only obstacles that hold you back are the ones in your head. so although i cant offer you any specific advice on this one, all i'll say is go for it, nothing can stop you. and while we're on the cliches - anything is possible if you just believe it. good luck!! peace and love stardust xxx
It does sounds great.. i've had something like that in my head.. not quite the same, but the travelling about england. Its not outamongolia.. its your back garden and its full of interesting people, places and experiences. It doesn't cost nearly as much and you don't have to worry about language difficulties! I say go for it!
its great! nothing can stop you. as long as you're prepared for having to stick up for yourself at some point (being nasty places around, you might lose all your stuff) but it doesn't need experience. there is a path that follows the coast of the country, so you could go by that way. i've walked a few of them - usually i just see how far i can get in a week, then hitch a ride back or something... its good fun, and you hardly need to plan
Go for it, definitely. I'm planning a hike from Lowestoft to Land End at some point, East coast to West, hopefully to raise money for Amnesty....
I have a cousin that did john o' groats to lands ebd, and he's totally inexperienced. It did a lot of good for him, and i think you should just go for it. Planning is essential though. ps, take a good supply of happy leaves, because you never know when you'll next be able to get some.
go for it.. palnning isn't essential at all.. i walked a great distance thru france about 3 months ago on my way to spain... dont need good maps especially if your walking the coast.. just stick to the coast, you can't get lost.... a compass is a good tool tho.. saved me a few times in france. don't worry about angry farmers.. camp just before it gets dark and leave in the morning.. i did that most of the way through france and it was no problem. be considerate to the surrounding country side.. don't take the piss and set up camp for a week.. and you should be fine. planning ruins the adventure.. i'd steer clear of that if i were you. but sounds like a blast.. go for it dude but remember... in the words of my aunty sue( possibly one of the most inspiring people in my life) " keep it simple, stupid"
