sophhhhhhhhhhie, help whats worth going to? The Shins, seeds and violent femmes...the rugby match.. those are about the only ones i know. what else is good?
firstly - those quotes. Classic, but sadly you will tend to get that. If it helps an american girl in my film class used to be terribly offended by such remarks, then after 2 years here she herself can realise how people jump to such conclusions - she said that she never realised how biased/'patriotic' the american media was until she travelled. anyway, absolutley go to the black seeds gig - try and get there for Dimmer's act as well. other awesome ones are Fat Freddy's Drop and The Chills, the latter are a NZ icon almost. the rest of the bands (well the ones I know of anyway) can be divided into basically pop-punk (of the *awesome* :rolleyes good charlotte variety and kiwi hip-hop. S'allright, but yep. The rugby is always classic, but there will be plenty of games, so don't stress if you miss this one. They are usually good value too - $10 -$15 for a ticket, a bus to and from the game and at least one free beer.
haha, they were all just jokes. The first one actually means canonballing, or i guess bombing for you guys. We went to a waterpark and he was reading off the rules and he said that. We all sat there dead silent thinking he was making some political joke, until we realized that he meant canonballing. It was quite hilarious . All the kiwis i've met so far have been great though. Alls good and thanks. I'll definitely have to hit those ones up and oooh, i got my otago card today..i must say i'm thoroughly impressed with it. My other uni card looks like balls compared to this.
lol, my id photo from first year is possibly the most brutal photo of anyone ever taken.. EVERYONE laughs when they see it, my friends, my family, even the library staff. It's kind of harsh
yeah, my freshman picture is hideous..quite shocking really..unfortunately its the same picture thats on my passport...
ahaha. Actually, my ID photo is probably worse. i look so incredibly pissed. Mind you, that's probably a good thing - i can get into any bar, no matter how drunk I am, because the bouncers just think "oh, that unforunate looking girl. She's not pissed, she look like that normally"
the shins concert was great-once they finally took the stage that is. The other two ones were pretty good (robert scott and the rockettes and the chills). I need to drink more water during the concerts though..it was sooooooooooooo hot in there.
yeah...get used to it. i went to an outdoor black seeds one and that was unbelievably hot...so the one on wed will be so toasty
sophie did you go to the concert last night? Was fat freddys the first one on? I had to leave before cat empire finished so i didnt get to see if there was a 4th band.
nah they were on last. There was a mega wait though, they didn't finish playing until about three am... so tired. i didn't see the 1st band, but was the second one tal e band? somethign like that fat freds were wicked though, and i loved cat empire...such stage presence, the groovy happy vibe was infectious
yeah, i ended up going at like 9:30 and the place was empty, like 35 people and some horrifically shit band was on..they were like 16 year old punk wannabes..but they had 13 year old groupies dancing..the only ones in the whole place dancing..so that was quite hilarious... but that sucks, now i'm disappointed i didnt go back after i brought a friend home.
Cat Empire played????? They are Aussies. what were they doing in NZ i just got back from australia last week. I went to the St Kilda festival. 500,000 people. thats the entire Wellington population on one street. (wide street of course) free concert with Cat Empire. they were awsome. the audience was totally going off. (it was majorly packed, probbaly a 100K or more just at the concert) people were making massive people pyramids, 3 layers high. they were fun to wqatch come crashing down. then some dude climbed up the concert rigging and was hanging off one handed being totally awsome. (till security climbed up and pulled him down from 20 meters up ) it was amasing fun. and Cat Empire were wicked. (Aussie equivalent to Black seeds i say) anyway have fun people. and Megara. hope you enjoy NZ. the media here might be fairly interesting to you, it will be way different than yours in the states i think. i'd be interested to see your reflections on it when you have been here way longer. see what you think of it Doug
thanks and yeah, the 5-6 songs i heard from cat empire were great. i've had a blast in NZ so far..i'm really glad i came here. As for the media..well we only get 4-5 channels at the flat, so i dont know how exposed i'll get. I definitely like your music channels far better than ours since they actually play music. The one difference i did notice is in the news..your news is a lot more cheery than ours. I'm sure a lot of that is caused because we are at war and we have a generally higher crime rate. Also because i'm sure there really is a lack of things to say for 30 minutes on a NZ broadcast. Its very similar to my local news in vermont. Its kinda like: "25 more US soldiers died. In other news, a moose walked into town today and was chased off by animal control." I think many non americans(and americans for that matter) look at people like bill o'reilly and think he is american news. I dont. Our 11 o clock news is very similar to your standard news. It is just a standard run down of what happened in the world. I'm sure there is differences in how the news reporters present what they say, but they arent spinning the news like news commentators do. I honestly think most people fail to grasp that when they look at american news. Most the shows i've seen so far are either american or aussie. I havent watched shortland street(i think thats it), but from what i'm told the big difference between american/oz soaps and kiwi soaps is that you guys use ugly people. I, however, have my doubts that they are ugly. But yeah, once i'm more exposed to kiwi media i'll let you know what i think. I doubt i'll have the same reactions on the news that you might think. I've always read a lot of different news sources so foreign news isnt new to me. I did watch scarfies last night and i thought it was brilliant. and for orientation news...concert last night rocked
it was cat empires first NZ concert, they are heading to welly as well, but we welcomed them grandly. and violent femmes actually played blister in the sun, that wqas cool, even though i nearly drowned in the mosh. as for news...a girl in my media class, who had just arrived from the states, said that she was surprised at some of the things on the news - like in the fact that the world isn't as soley focussed on the USA as the news over there would have people believe. also, chris, if you can get channel 7 - that's dunedin TV, you should check out Cow TV, the student show - its so shit but kinda funny. The do this walk of shame thing where they film people coming home from someones house in the early hours of the morning. Classic.
