This may seem a little silly, but it helps me. Think of a common word, and write down all the synonyms you can think of without looking it up. walk traipse, amble, mosey, step, heel-toe it, hoof it, meander, stumble, glide, move, stroll, saunter, hike find seek, hunt, look for, strive for, chase, want, locate, uncover beatiful pretty, comely, gorgeous, well-kept, breath-taking, jaw-dropping, fresh, sexy, striking, magnificent, tight (it's vernacular among some subcultures), cultured, romantic
joy, bliss, ecstasy, euphoria, paroxysm, elation, happiness, glee, merriment This is harder than I thought.
The interesting thing about synonyms remains that despite the number of words that might approximate what you want to say only one of them is a perfect fit. No word is identical in intent to another.
Synonyms are words that mean almost the same thing. Mosey is a Southern US word for walking with an air of nonchalance, as if without care or need.
'mosey on down...' lov e that phras! synonym. like a thesaurusised word?! similar, like, same, identical, approximately...lol i don't really get it.
Just pick a word and come up with as many words meaning the same or similar things as you can. I assume the idea is to not use a thesaurus (I didn't) and see how far your own vocabulary really stretches. Trying it was words for vagina/penis if you need to warm up.
LOL. Penis? That could go on forever. How about sex? make love, score, intercourse, adult relations (I heard it on that sitcom with the reverend who won't stop getting his wife pregnant, and they have twenty teenagers living with them), go down, knock up, fuck, screw, embrace, copulate, mate, engage, foreplay, take, sleep with, give head, lay together, get to know better, jump, hook-up, threeway, threesome, orgy - this could go on forever, too. It does demonstrate the point Kidder made, about how only one word is a perfect fit. Though, it makes me wonder why I can think up over twenty words to describe sex acts, but only three to describe poetry (lyric, song, verse).
That's because sex is more important, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either a virgin or a pretentious cock.
well since we're playing the synonym game... synonymous (hehe)same, similaralike, like, corelative, transposable, parallel, reciprocal, even, equal equavilent,reciprocative,similitude...ergh that's all i got
hmm, good thread idea. sleep slumber, dreaming, rest, hibernation, dormancy, swoon, shut-eye marijuana (easy one) pot, weed, dope, chronic, dro, bud, kind, herb, ganja, grass, green, cannabis, hash(ish), mary jane, tree, skunk, schwag, dank, satvia, indica...could go on, I'm sure. music tunes, melody, rhythm, song, beat, song river stream, flow, flood, wash, run, creek (crick), brook, tributary, runoff, torrent As far as importance equating to more synonyms, I can only think of three for "life": vitality, spirit, and essence. Perhaps elan and energy work too. I'd say the "taboo" things equate to more synonyms, for need to come up with code words and euphamisms. Also, this is a lot harder to do when you're just coming up with words. When I'm writing it flows naturally and the right words seem to surface on their own.
Yes, but we all have different vocabularies based on where we grew up, what we read, who we hang out with, how old we are, even what music we listen to. The purpose of me posting this here was to learn more words. I'll keep the new words I learn here in my mind and use them the next time I need a new way of saying something. The English vocabulary practically goes on forever. Though I read a wide variety of books, newspapers, essays, letters, websites, etc., and I have a decent vocabulary, I still have trouble coming up with the "right" word. debatable moot, uncertain, shaky, contraversial, unsettled, fickle tummy belly, torso, stomach, bowles, abdomen, abs, vessel, womb write pen, script, scribble, scrawl, draw, type, create, command,
