My dog seems to be licking her two front paws pretty excessively lately and for long periods at a time. I've checked them out and there isn't any sort of wound. What could be the problem? Is she doing it out of bordem maybe?

My dog does that too...I was wondering if dry skin and itchiness was causing it...just started putting flax seed oil in her food (as the vet suggested) to see if that works...we shall see!

Actually she knaws and bites at them a little. It's out of the ordinary for her.

I took my dog to the vet because he was doing the same thing. He would lick his paws all day. He looked miserable, and it made him stink, too (lol).,The vet said that it was allergies. I still don't understand why/how having allergies made him lick his paws. They told me to give him a 25mg tablet of benadryl, and it helped a lot. I felt bad giving it to him, because he was so sleepy, but as long as he felt better, it was okay I guess. I noticed that he stopped doing it when the weather got colder.

Check the pads of the foot for cracking also. If there is any you can use a little Vaseline on them to moistures them. Winter is hard on their feet with the cold and salt that is everywhere.

You can take some hydrocortizone cream (but you dont want her to lick it to much one lick okay... continouse licking not good) and put some on her feet see if she stops.... or they have shampoo for animals made out of oatmeal that helps dry skin... I would try to find the oatmeal shampoo and just wash her feet with it... or even some head and shoulders or anti dandruff shampoo...

Good idea, Faerie. I tried the hydrocortizone and that helped him, too. They even make some kind for pets that the sell at the petstore. (I doubt if its any different than the kind for humans).

I know that unfortunatley no matter what I put on her paws...cream etc.....she will lick it all off. She is just that way. I guess it could be a number of things. I'll just have to keep an eye on her and try to detour her from doing it. I tried putting little socks on her front paws but she pulled them off:p I'll keep an eye on it and thanks for all your comments! The oatmeal foot bath might help...I'll give that one a try!

    Hello dear Elle!!!
    It's me again!
Does it snow where u live?
My dog does that after I take him for walks and there is snow outside.
You should keep an eye on it...for red spots or tiny cuts!

    Hi fernanda!!:)

It doesn't really snow so fortunatley that's not a problem for her. But I will def keep a close eye on her paws.
    Hope you are well!!!

What type of food is she on? It is most likely allergies. Very rarely is something like this an obsessive thing, but it's best to get it checked out anyways. Next time she does it try moving her attention to something yummy, like a peanut-butter filled Kong or a flavoured Nylabone. It could also be the snow -- some dogsget snow stuck in between their pads, so they lick it -- but the salive makes it worse. They keep on licking not knowing that it is only getting worse. Try some Udderly Smooth Lotion. You can buy it all Wal-Mart for only 2 something a tube. Good stuff - safe for animals! It was origially used to keep cow udders from drying. Now it is a hand and body lotion, but I know lots of people that use it on their dogs' paws. Good luck!

She is on the same food she has always been on......I would get some lotion but knowing her, she would not only lick all the lotion off but then continue to lick her paws raw after the fact. No snow here so that's not it. I might just give that lotion a try anyway though....it couldnt hurt right!

    Thanks for your help!
    I really apprechiate everyone's comments
