I've always been a huge fan of live music... but I seem to find more and more these days that 'official' live albums don't seem to capture that 'essence' of a what I think a live show should be... (Maybe this is obvious, I don't know?)

I think they're edited and honed so much that they might as well be a studio effort sometimes...

Since I started collecting 'unofficial' live shows, which are 'warts n' all', I have a hard time listening to their 'official' counterparts..

I guess the sound quality argument would be most peoples starting point here... but I can get over that... unless it's painfully bad of course lol

Does anyone else have any sort of thoughts on this, or am I yappin' up the incorrect bark-skinned beast here? lol

... on a similar issue.. Does it annoy anyone else as much as it does me when you're watching a concert video and the sound and visuals clearly don't match? lol I don't think the makers of these things will ever grasp the fact that we infact don't want to see their silly effects etc.. lol

Okay... my work is done here for now.. :)

a lot of bands allow their fans to tape the concerts which gives pretty decent sounding recordings, they don't have the mixed in extra guitar, audience and fades at the beginning/end of songs ..plus they are complete which is something that annoys me with official releases

some bands even allow the tapers to plug in on the soundboard and then you get a recording that's even better than an official release :sunglasse

Not all live cds are bad, i have ozzy's live at budokan which is kickass.

And then theres Mettalica, which has every single person patted down before the concert so that no one can bring in anything to tape the concert.

"Live In Japan" by Deep Purple, it's a 3 CD box set with pretty much the entire Japanese tour of 1972 minus 3 encores and 2 other songs that were cut to fit in some of the encores but those are found on the Made In Japan album. The album "Made in Japan" is no slouch either.

I agree live albums are awesome.

    But some are just shit.

    My faves are

    Black Sabbath reunion

    John butlers "living"

    Ben harpers "live from mars"

    Nirvana "unplugged'

I end up yelling out what the people in the crowd and the band members say. I just think they record it in a better atmosphere...

a lot of the unplugged albulms are great , there fells like theres a lot more intimacy to the gig... nrvana unplugged is genius you have kurt talking to the audience, saying he will screw a song up. and then nailing it...
i think the intimate albums display more from the artist than the huge rockin stadiums or clubs

try Pacifier live, if you want live raw energy
