In Taking Up Trump’s Immunity Claim, Supreme Court Bolstered His Delay Strategy excerpt: "Judge Chutkan froze the election case on Dec. 13. That means, if she sticks to her decision, she owes Mr. Trump an additional 82 days of preparation time — equivalent to the period between Dec. 13 and the originally scheduled trial date of March 4. If the Supreme Court renders a ruling on the immunity decision in June and preparations for the trial start up again immediately, the extra 82 days could push a trial date into September. At that point, the general election campaign would be in full swing — and there would be no guarantee that the trial could be completed by Election Day."

Trump appeals ruling disqualifying him from Illinois ballot: Latest update excerpt: Nancy Pelosi took to X, formerly Twitter, to share her thoughts on the ruling. "The Supreme Court is placing itself on trial with its decision to hear the former president’s total immunity claim. It remains to be seen whether the justices will uphold the fundamental American value that no one is above the law – not even a former president," Pelosi wrote.
Typical Trump. He says he will pay only 20% of what he owes. Engoron rejected Trump's offer. It didn't work in the civil docket and it won't work in the criminal docket.

Clarence Thomas to decide if Trump has immunity for the coup attempt his own wife planned https://boingboing.net/2024/02/29/clarence-thomas-sides-with-coup-loving-wife.html excerpt: "Justice Clarence Thomas is compromised. On January 19, 2022, Thomas was the only Supreme Court justice willing to help Trump and his allies hide from justice over the January 6th insurrection. Thomas did not hide that he was willing to grant Trump's request for secrecy, but it wasn't just to protect Trump and his conspirators. It was to protect his wife, Ginni Thomas. A radical right-wing activist, Ginni Thomas has openly applauded rebellion in the past."
All Trump has to do now is illegally pay Stormy Daniels hush money under the table via Michael Cohen to not testify in criminal court where he is being tried for illegally paying hush money to Stormy Daniels under the table via Cohen.
Funny how the Supreme Court denied Smith review of the case, but then when Trumps attorneys request it, they get it? So private citizen Trump has more sway over the Supreme Court than does a Special Prosecutor who has the goods on Trump? Something very wrong here, and it looks to me that the court will find reasons to delay and Trump will somehow get his case delayed until after the election. And of course Clarence is in the bag for him, Alito as well.
https://www.politico.com/news/2024/02/29/rnc-trump-legal-bills-00144331 excerpt: "It would be illegal for a political party to pay a legal judgment arising from someone’s personal conduct (as opposed to a judgment tied to the person’s conduct as an officeholder or candidate), according to legal experts. Ciara Torres-Spelliscy, a professor who specializes in election law at Stetson University law school, said there would be a “high risk” of the RNC violating campaign finance laws if it were to pay the civil fraud judgment because that case concerned only Trump’s family business. “That cost was generated by his running the Trump Org fraudulently,” she wrote in an email. “That has nothing to do with him being a candidate or an office holder.”"
It looks even worse for the Republicans and their 'star witness' who was supposedly going to expose Biden over a $10 million bribe he supposedly accepted.. Smirnov is linked to intel connecting Trump to Russia in the 2016 election interference.. The Republicans in Congress have been frantic in deleting his name from Congressional records. With Trump’s SCOTUS Appeal, Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied excerpt: "And delay breeds more delay. When the district-court proceedings were paused, just over three months remained before the March 4 trial date. Assuming that Judge Tanya Chutkan holds to a similar timeline, a Supreme Court decision on, say, June 30 would mean a trial that starts at the end of September. Judge Chutkan has proved to be a brave and resolute jurist so far, but it would nevertheless be an impressively bold move to start a six-week trial (that’s what is predicted) just five weeks before the election. Can you imagine the reaction if Trump were forced to spend the last five weeks in a D.C. courthouse instead of on the campaign trail? The tumult? The violence? The sheer craziness of the moment? No matter how resolute she may be, Judge Chutkan seems likely to delay the trial until after the election—and that means that if Trump wins the election, the trial will never happen. (As an aside, imagine the even crazier scenario where Trump wins the election and the trial goes forward in mid-November, with a conviction coming before the electoral votes are counted. The country does not need that sort of excitement.)"
With Trump’s SCOTUS Appeal, Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied excerpt: "It is hard to think of a positive reason for doing so. One might offer the rosy spin that the justices have concluded that taking their time will improve their decision making. But this Court has not demonstrated that sort of concern before—on the contrary, the well-documented increase in the use of a shadow docket reveals a willingness to make consequential, divisive decisions (about immigration, COVID vaccines, gun rights, and abortion) without the benefit of lengthy consideration and comprehensive briefing."
The public is left with the impression that the Supreme Court, after its delay, will toss its decision papers out the window of Clarence and Ginni Thomas' luxurious $267,0000 tour bus (that was donated to them by a billionaire unreported along with other gifts) as the tires screech and it speeds away for summer vacation at the end of the court's session in June (supposely to a Walmart parking lot where Thomas claims he likes to hang out with the low income people).
A reminder of the federal appeals court unanimous ruling and its 57-page comment that was highly critical of Trump's immunity claims. Takeaways from rejection of Trump immunity claim by federal appeals court | CNN Politics excerpt: "The appeals court pointed to past presidents to refute Trump. The judges noted that Gerald Ford issued a full pardon to Richard Nixon after Nixon’s resignation, and that Bill Clinton cut a deal including paying a fine and temporarily giving up his law license to avoid possible criminal charges while an independent prosecutor investigated him. The panel went on to quote a Nixon-era Supreme Court ruling about the bounds of presidential immunity, saying, “The federal prosecution of a former President fits the case ‘[w]hen judicial action is needed to serve broad public interests’ in order to ‘vindicate the public interest in an ongoing criminal prosecution.’” These findings were consistent with the rationale provided by Chutkan, who similarly dismantled Trump’s immunity claims in resounding fashion last year."
It remains to be seen what, if anything, the U.S. Supreme Court will add as useful to such a ruling by the federal appeals court.
