That sucks about the rents. My dad loved my dreads but when I took them out he got dissapointed. The whole extended fam loved them too. Its awesome and comforting to have this acceptance in the home. Good luck going through the Bitching Process. Thats what my mother did to me the first time I had dreads. I gave it a half a year and tried again. Got dreadies and didn't like them. I love my natural hair.

I say don't mix in the backcombing..it's alot kewler of a process when u just stop brushing you hair...and plus then it will be a gradual thing..u can ease ur folks into them slowly..and they will just become used to it..i'm so excited for you! it's so neat when people can just let their hair dread up..

u have to be paitent thoug mama..it's gonna take along time...my girl miranda just started about 5 months ago..and her hair looks like shit..to the average eye...but u can tell that the dreadies are forming..and it's so neat..all of her hair has separated..and the bottom eight inches or so has started to knot up nicely...it's so much fun to watch her hair evolve..everyday it's changing and different..and evey time i see her .. it looks better and better...

wow..i'm so excited for u mama...

how are u washing you hair ? ?

well... ive been washing it like normal... nothing real different.. no conditinor though.. ive been washing it everyday.. is that no good? im afraid that because my hair gets SOOO oily that the knots would slip out..

and i didnt mean backcombing, i meant like ripping them apart so that they dont get abnormally HUUUUGE!!! my bad, ill edit that...

and ive been using this really cheap shampoo.. suave daily clarifying.. it leaves NO residue.. so thats good... any suggestions or comments, sisters!?

I'd say don't use regular shampoos. They have vitamins and way too many additives in them that could mess with your hair, plus they have fragrance which you want to stay away from(leaves residue and when your hair starts clumping into dreadlocks you don't want those itchies!). If you can just buy a normal bar soap for hair from a natural foods store, or a dreadlock specific shampoo... one with as few ingredients as possible. If you can't pronounce an ingredients name... it most likely won't be helping your hair out. A little oil is ok but the object is to dry it out so I'd go with washing it less than everyday... maybe every couple days? I don't think everday washing will hurt it though if you have a bar soap/dreadlock soap.

check out www.knottyboy.com for dread soaps if you don't have a natural foods store around, they aren't too bad(price wise).

salt water seems to help some folks.
might want to band off some hair in the front to encourage the dreading.

your hair looks like mine did when it first started dreading up! i washed it nearly everyday with dr. bronner's (you can get it at health food stores, and places like whole foods and central market)--i found washing it often tended to make it dryer and it would tousle and knot my hair really well (perfect for dreads). i just let my hair do its thing, and it lost a TON of length, but i have fat, hard dreads now and it's been about 6 months. if you don't want to lose so much length, you could start sectioning off or separating you hair now. good luck mama!

wow i love your hair! It seems like the perfect knotting up texture. A good dr. bonners that I like is the tea tree bar. You can get them on-line from anywhere like a online drugstore to ebay... if you have a health food store near you, they'll have them. The rosemary bar smells good too.

it shouldnt... all of dr. bonners have small amounts of ingredients... I would rinse it a couple times though just to make sure. With my dreadies I always do that so I can keep them from getting itchy.
