I'm glad the boy in SC didnt get away with his excuse that his use of zoloft made him shoot his grandparents to death. Can't believe they found a jury in this day & age reasonable enough to believe in personal responsibility. Between that and the recent limiting of civil lawsuits maybe we'll get back to being more realistic and taking ownership for our own actions and decisions.
Antidepressants can cause you to hurt yourself and others. Just because this boy isn't guilty doesn't mean it couldn't happen. In fact when Eli Lilly submitted their Prozac trial data to the FDA they shaved off a few weeks of data, from before people started killing themselves. All those kids who shot up their schools were on antidepressants. All those moms who killed their kids too. They have never proven the "chemical imbalance" theory. So if you take antidepressants you are a guinea pig. They really have no idea how it will affect you. nonono, antidepressants could be a godsend if you actually NEED them but antidepressants are over perscribed. so if you dont need them, they'll mess with your chemistry.
Hm, I know i need them, but ever since I started taking Zoloft, I've had waaay more suicidal/homicidal tendancies...
I don't care what anyone says, I believe that these psychotropic pharmaceuticals are dangerous, which is why I advise people not to take them. There are much better, natural cures for anxiety and depression. The med route is not the only route just because you believe it is, as that has been the only thing pushed in your face and offered as a treatment (not cure) for these afflictions throughout your life. While I cannot say if Zoloft caused this person to murder, it seems awfully suspicious that many people who do end up going bonkers and killing a lot of people (ie: Columbine) were taking such drugs for anxiety and depression. Go figure.
I'm on Zoloft and it has been a godsend. I know it's the zoloft balancing me out too because I have been on and off it quite a few times before I really stuck to getting treatment, and have paid attention to how I have reacted. AntiD's are overprescribed, that is a problem. And they're too damned easy to get a hold of. I made an effort in my own treatment to use St. John's Wort, exercise, getting out in the sun more often, sooo many other wacko and not so wacko things, and then finally saw a therepist. When seeing the therepist, I told her from the get go, I didn't want to be on drugs unless I decided in my research and such, that I wanted to try it again. I went for quite a while on just therepy before I made that decision. I had my therepist sit in with me on a few consultations with my psychiatrist before Zoloft was prescribed. I made a conscious effort to make sure this kind of drug was what I needed. And it has helped me immensly. More than anyone here could ever know. I believe more people need to take some of the same steps that I did in their treatment...and not let all the stupid tv ads, and yes their own doctors, influence their own decisions. I remember at one time, I had been getting free samples of zoloft from the school therepist...#1 example of how damned too easy it is to get these things. Anyway, when I went home for summer, and didn't have a therepist or psychiatrist yet, I just went to the local urgent care clinic where I used to get my sports checkups for highschool. I just told the doc I was depressed and needed more meds, and he prescribed it! WAY TOO FREAKIN EASY! I think these things need to be better controlled, but I just cannot agree with anyone that they are dangerous for everyone, and I definitely will not agree that there are BETTER natural cures, when for me, and I'm sure a whole slew of other people out there, there are NOT better natural cures, and the only thing that has helped is the prescription drug. It's all case by case. People need to realize that this stuff affects your brain in ways we still aren't even positive of. So GREAT care must be taken when trying these drugs. People don't realize that anymore because of the cute little commercials, and the overwillingness of some doctors to prescribe these meds. But yeah, case by case...it works greatly for some, others, not so much. If more doctors would actually pay attention to their patients, and encourage the patients to pay attention to how they react and to TELL them about it, then these cases of people going crazy on these meds would drop, I'm POSITIVE. I'm sorry, but I am not about to have ANOTHER drug taken off the market because of stupid people or bad doctors.
It's part of a larger trend of victimization in America, people don't take responsibility for anything anymore. This is a lot more sinister then the 'Mcdonalds made my ass too big' bullshit spouted off... The mechanics of SSRI's are fairly simple, and whatever slight variations it caused in an N5 reuptake, wouldn't make a 'nice boy kill'. This comes after cases of families whos loved one on anti-depressants killed themselves... ignoring the fact that suicidal people tend to be depressed. Even if there were some studies done that could prove that SSRI's could triger violent behavior, thats still not an excuse. Should a drunk asshole who shoots somebody by exempt because he was drunk? Hell no. We need to stop buying into this everyones a victim bullshit and hold people accountable for their actions.
