My best friend is adopting a little boy from Guatamala. He'll be about a yr old when the process is done. I want to start making a box of goodies to give her. It will be her and her husbands first child. I thought of a baby quilt, I want a certain theme for the fabric though any ideas?

Also I want to make other things too...but am running low on ideas. They still have a while before the process is done, so I can do just about anything.

Im so excited for them though I want to get out all my baby excitement doing something productive. :)

    Thanks!

i saw a wikkid presant for babies in one of our natural baby shops here, in the end i bought it for jaycees stocking i thought it was so cool. Though i guess its something u have to buy rather than make. But it was a big dried vannila pod and it wqas a rattle so when you shook it is was like a rattle or an instrument :)

but anything fun and hands on and noisey to play with :)

the little towel hoodie robe things for babies and pretty cute and easy to make. you put fabric on the outside and terry on the inside and then you can take it to an embroidery company and get it monogrammed. My mom made one for her friends daughter and did frog fabric on the outside and light green terry cloth on the inside and then had her name monogrammed in cream it was gorgeous. Also if the person is close to you and you are a really good knitter or crocheter then you could make a cashmere sweaer if you have a good yarn shop near by. The yarn alone will run you like 50 or 60 bucks though but it makes an awesome shower gift especially if you make a matching hat.

here's some ideas~~ tie dye some lil tshirts or onesies, knit sweaters are always handy (if you can't knit, i've seen em for sale in smaller privately owned craftstores) maybe make a homemade diaper bag with lots of pockets to organize things and maybe fill it with handy supplies. I dunno if he'll be too old, but a baby sling would be a nice present~~ next time i have a baby that's the number one thing i want. Ooo one of those lil knit hats with ears on it would be a neat present too check out (they have some on www.enchantedtree.com) Also homemade natural baby products (i.e. baby balm, oil, diaper rash cream, etc.) would be a neat idea, I'd do a search on the web or find a good natural beauty care book for recipes~~Rosemary Gladstar has a book about herbal healing for children that has some good ones. Hmm.... Or if you're lazy just find some premade natural ones (I like Burt's Bees baby bees kit and California Baby has good organic products. Also neat ideas would be like whole foods cookbooks aimed esp. at toddler foods or whatnot. Also www.magiccabin.com has some neat natural toys... but they're a bit pricey~~might give ya some ideas tho (i'd order their catalog, its free) Photo Albums or Scrapbook supplies might be a fun idea too.... Also maybe getting some classic children's books for them ~~ Goodnight Moon would be a good one, kids are entranced by that book. Haha, I'll stop now, I'm getting carried away :)

I just finished tie dyeing onesies...but u could get the bigger t-shirts for bigger babys and do that, it was cheep, like 30 for the shirts (3 for the kids 5 for me and mom) and the dye kit at Wallmart...it only took me like, 20 mins once i figured out what i was doing...

you could make the baby a cloth book...

you could make a pretty painting to hang in the babies room...

make the baby a small colorful hemp anklet minus the beads(choking hazard)...

Maybe look up about the babies culture and put together a scrap book all about where hes from for when hes older (tell mom and dad first so they can bring back suvineers(sp?) for his book)...

yarn animals or dolls, stuffed sock animals...

what about mittens? I find it hard to find my kids small enough gloves...

I found fabric at eQuilter.com that was multicultural babies in peapods. It was so cute. I made a quilt for my son and had our picture put on it at one of those places in the mall that puts pictures on fabric. We sent it to Guatemala for our son to keep until we were able to bring him home. So every day he got to see our picture. We also sent a small cloth photo album with pictures of our family and his room and things like that. Every day his foster mother would show him the pictures and tell him it was mami and popi. When he was brought to us he was wrapped in the quilt that we had sent him.

As far as gifts for after he is home I loved anything tye dye that we got. Also organic fabrics. You can get some really cute baby and children's things from places like littlehippie.com, littlepagans.com, and littlelefties.com.

We used a sling with our son but he was only 5 1/2 months when we brought him home. The one thing you have to remember about things that you send down to the baby is that you may not get them back. Also try to send things with other families. The mail is very unreliable and the things you send may never arrive.
If you're thinking about a crib mobile. We took a regular mobile and cut the bears off of it. Then we tied on the little stuffed animals that we bought in Guatemala. They are made of bright colors on beautiful woven fabric. I think I may still have it if you're interested.
