I find a lot of hippies in the cruising sailors' world. People who try to avoid society's restrictions and live their lives in harmony with nature and as citizens of the world.

Go to any cruising port in the world and you'll find people of all nations who will be happy to be in friendship with you.

Very true! It's been that way for DECADES. In the Virgin Islands there was an active community of hippies living on houseboats, sailboats and cruisers in the large lagoon on the east end of St Thomas.

All up and down the Caribbean islands you will find them, sailing around, living with nature, having a great life.

To be clear, are you talking about people going on cruises or people who live in ports where cruise ships dock?

    Noooooo cruises on cruise ships!

I'm referring to people who live aboard their own sailboats and travel about the world via the sea, and the ports that cater to them.

Spinsheet has a pretty good definition of what constitutes cruising:

I'd be remiss to not mention Hawaii, especially in certain districts on Maui or da Big Island.

Take the Puna District on da Big Island. It's on the windward side so it has lush vegetation (although more and more of that is becoming fucking invasive species) and boucoup hippies. And plots of land growing awesome weed. And sustainable communes. I loved the wee village of Pahoa, with all its organic bakeries and restaurants and grocers, and shops selling books that appeal to all a hippie's tastes, plus crystals and handcrafts and really cool straw hats.

I really hope Pahoa still exists after Madam Pele decided to switch things up and run, like, a zillion cubic yards of magma from the east rift zone.

Anyway, there are hippie enclaves in Hawaii.

Did we actually define what a hippie is? I think we have some idea of what they were and stood for in the 60s/70s. A lot of those hippies are no longer with us, and many others have become a bit more conservative in their advanced age. Is calling yourself a hippie in 2024 different? Pot is legal. There is no draft. What exactly are we fighting for?

    Don't ask me I don't give a damn
    Next stop is Disneyland!

Seriously, at the moment we're fighting for an end to the wars in Ukraine and Israel, as well as fighting for Kamala Harris whether you have confidence in her or not, because a 2nd Trump term would be a catastrophe!

Yeah, gotta watch for lava flows there! On Maui, there's the road to Hana, where you can find some hippies living in trees in the jungle. Past the 7 pools there used to be some pretty cool hippie hangouts. I remember hanging out there with a bunch of women doing Kundalini, which I guess is called Hot Yoga now. Not far away is the secret pool that only locals know about.

I think you might not be able to camp at big McKenna or Little beach anymore, but once upon a time, it was THE PLACE to be, cause it's still a nude beach. There are also hippies upcountry, Makawao, Pukalani, Kula, Maui Meadows, etc.
