No real answer to the question, but there was a time when people could talk and debate. Berkeley used to be a haven for freedom of expression but not anymore. Wonder if it ever comes back?

Hate has been patented by the internet, particularly Facebook. Because all those hate messages are good for business and bringing more people online to get their personal information stolen.

It also helps the reputation of the internet in becoming the world's largest dustbin.

American politics have gotten so mean and hateful, and crass. I'm' not necessarily prude but "fuck your feelings" is not a statement that makes society that much better.

99% of communication is done online. People work from home, order groceries from home, cybersex, etc... There's no community. Neighbors used to know each other, now they rob, kill, etc.....

Lack of soul nutrition.. Deaths of despair.. Many people are angry. I'm one of them. The only thing I love are great music, movies, stand-up from before my time, and so I spread it, around and if someone else laughs or feels a tickle in their brain, that's great. (Just wish some would share that experience, too)

It probably started with television, this device that is conveniently located in your house that can do a lot of your thinking for you. It was easy enough to watch your favorite program and just leave the TV on and watch then next one (or three) when there were only three channels, rather than do something social. Technology, which among other things is supposed to solve social problems, seems to have created new ones with the internet. Smartphones as we are aware are not a natural way to relate to each other. Then again what is better: an instant message to a person on another continent on a smartphone, or waiting weeks or maybe even months for a letter to get sent back?

Back in 1957, a family member bought a television and my late mother and I were invited to watch it. My mother christened it the "lunartics lantern" and swore that she would never allow one of the contraptions in the house. She never did and up until her death in 2000 (aged 97) she had never watched a television program.
We own one now, but is is switched on for about 2 hours a week. I only use it to watch freeview repeats of some of Roy Clark's comedy series. None of our 3 children, aged 32 to 43, watch it on a regular basis.
I agree that text messages can be useful. According to our accountant. I have sent 7 of them over the last 10 years. :D
I have however managed about 6,500 messages on HF. We all have our faults. Between 1970 and 1987, mine included watching 3 film at the cinema every day. :)

A lot of it could be ego and people being power crazed that they are superior and by hating and oppressing and bullying and criticism makes them feel powerful and superior .

the haters are not humble and graceful it seems but may pretend to be.

Hitler easily got popular because he incited hate by tickling egos of the non Jewish n gay Germans that they are superior and perfect and the other ones worthless and shouldn’t exist.
They loved the thought of them being superior even though it not truth it made them feel great and arrogant .

then there’s fakeness which is yuck stuff too .

    Peace n love !

while I agree that there is a lot of nuances most people don’t account for — I think we shouldn’t tolerate any bigotry on this forum. I cannot love or respect a view point that is hateful. You can agree to disagree on pizza toppings, but once you have horrible opinions that infringe on human rights or animal rights; then we have a problem.
