I hope MAGA fans enjoy life under billionaire Elon Musk's new world order | Opinion excerpt: "Since it appears that unelected, South-African-born billionaire Elon Musk is effectively running the country, I’d like to have a quick word with all the right-wing conspiracy theorists out there. Hey, guys. Do you remember how you spent forever babbling on and on about shadowy billionaires trying to implement a totalitarian government and bring about “a new world order” and such? I mean, the whole “fear of monied elites” has kind of been your bag for as long as I can remember. Conspiratorial loudmouth Rush Limbaugh painted liberal billionaire George Soros as a puppet master controlling then-President Barack Obama. And Republicans refer to liberals as “rich coastal elites” so often they probably repeat it in their sleep."

Soft coup. Soft coup - Wikipedia excerpt: "According to Axel Kaiser, a Chilean lawyer member of the Mises Institute, the soft coup is often part of a conspiracy theory used by Latin American populists who seek the centralization of power but do so under the pretense of improving democracy. Kaiser argues that the Latin American leaders' rationale is that democracy should be a system where the general will must be absolute, and that the populist leader describes himself as the representative of the general will by virtue of having been elected by the people. Kaiser says that these leaders feel that the will of the leader equals the general will, and that any limits on the will of the leader would be also a limit to the general will itself.[3] In this scenario, opposition to the leader is treated as an act against democracy, justifying persecution of the opposition, forced nationalizations and limits to the freedom of the press.[4] This notion of democracy is opposed to the one traditionally held in the United States, which considers that rulers must have limits to their power;[4] it also conflicts with minority rights.[5]"
Why Pence should know that voters alone can’t decide Trump’s fate During Trump’s first impeachment, the GOP pushed the misplaced “let voters decide” argument. Four years later, the talking point is back — and it’s worse. By Steve Benen August 22, 2023 Why Pence should know that voters alone can’t decide Trump’s fate excerpt: "But the core problem with those making this pitch was their reluctance to reckon with the larger context: Trump had tried to extort a U.S. ally in the hopes that it would help him cheat in the upcoming election. Simply letting that misconduct go unchallenged, so the matter could be resolved by that election, obviously didn’t make any sense, and it ultimately proved unpersuasive. Four years later, a variation on the same argument is back — though it’s noticeably worse now. Sen. Lindsey Graham helped get the ball rolling last week, applying the talking point to the former president’s criminal indictments. “The American people can decide whether they want him to be president or not,” the South Carolina Republican said on Fox News. “This should be decided at the ballot box.” Sen. Ted Cruz pushed a very similar line soon after, as did Sen. Tom Cotton, who insisted that everyone would benefit if Trump’s critics “try to stop him on the campaign trail and at the ballot box, and let the American people make these choices.”"
Pence was close to being injured or killed by Trump during his riot, yet he still defended Trump by talking like voters are Trump's accountability, not the justice system. Pence has also said that history should decide Trump's fate, not the justice system.
It's a remarkable stance for Pence to take. It conjures up thoughts about what Pence's stance would have been if Trump's rioters injured or killed his daughter who was at the Capitol that day with him and stuck in the basement for hours. Based on the way Pence has defended Trump, there doesn't seem to be any reason to think that Pence wouldn't have still defended Trump.

Musk's DOGE gets more power and winter weather across the U.S.: Morning Rundown excerpt: Trump is giving Musk and DOGE even more power As Elon Musk stood next to him in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump announced an executive order giving the wealthiest person in the world and his DOGE office more power over the federal workforce. The new executive order directs federal agencies to “coordinate and consult” with the Department of Government Efficiency to cut jobs and limit hiring, according to a summary from the White House. Each agency will “undertake plans for large-scale reductions in force” and limit hiring to only “essential positions.” The national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, a union representing 800,000 federal and Washington, D.C., government workers, said the Trump administration’s “reckless, unjustified cuts” were aimed at rewarding “Musk and Trump’s billionaire buddies.”
