Do you need a permit to have a protest?

I'm not very legal savvy, and I've been plannig a protest. It's nothing very big, but I was just wondering if someone knew much about permits and these things.

 

I don't think so, unless you're protesting on private property, you shouldn't need one. I don't know why you would need one. If you really want one, try your local courthouse. Or check with the police department.
Seems stupid though.

 

thanks, it does seem stupid. I mean the first amendment says we have the freedom for assembly. Anyway, i was just wondering because a friend of mine told me that you would need one.

 

Yes, you do need one. All protests, whether on public or private property, need to have a permit so that the city can provide police (if the gathering is expected to be over a certain number of people) to make sure the protest is peaceful. The police can't legally stop you from protesting as long as you have a permit, although they will probably restrict you to certain areas such as the side walk or certain streets so you don't block traffic. It may seem stupid, but it does give you legal protection. And actually, it's not the dumbest thing the city regulates--I had a garage sale last week and needed a permit for that.

Ok, but what if the protest is under a certain amount of people? You need one for a lot of people, but if it is sem-small? Is a permit still required?

 

Probably. Just look into it. It may seem like a pain but it's better than having no legal protection if they try and shut you down.
