Hello, I just wanted to check out if there are many fans of 60s/70s and newest Progressive Rock around here. Maybe we start some threads on various Progressive things, discussing music and so on, hinting for prog-events and more. See you Green Shades
hallo GS, i`m writing in english, although we could talk in german, but it`s easier for the others to read. i am almost exclusivly listening to music from the 60`s ... f.e. Bob Dylan, Stones, Beatles, the Dead, Doors, Janis... but a friend of mine gave me some "new" progressive stuff: a band called Phish. I really started loving their music! if you like, you have to come to the "think progressive" festival http://www.kosmos-festival.de/ you have to take a look at the gallery... i was there last year and it was the greatest festival- event of my life! Liebe Grüße, Sabine
Hawkind? Oh man I love Silver Machine, I haven't heard much else though. Can't forget Van Der Graaf Generator and Yes. I've only started to listen to Prog. rock so I only know the more famous stuff at the moment. I hope to develop my knowledge though because I certainly like what I've heard!
hell yeah! You Enjoy Myself....period. 'm into some prog. dig Yes big time, and floyd and jethro tull. umphrey's mcgee's like prog-jam kinda. but i like the dead and countrier stuff too... well, peace out!
Prog rock, that's the stuff with 5-bar phrases and rhythmic peculiarities just for the fun of it, yes? If so then I could probably see a way into it, as from a jazz point of view that sort of thing makes a lot of sense to me.
Well, try to draw a line between progressive- and jazz-rock and you'll end up with a cloud. So this is going to be close to Jazz. Theo Travis played the Saxophone on the last Tangent, and there are lot's more exemples. This thread is starting good. I learnt about several bands I did not know until now. Anyway, who of you already listened to the latest Spock's Beard? Greetings
My first experience with Progressive Rock is Lizard by King Crimson. Nektar. I heard only one song on a local Heavy Metal show and I thought it was absolutely cool. What is Progressive Rock? My guess is: Highly gifted, classically trained musicians, with versitile musical tastes, who could not find work in the fields they where trained in. So they applied their skills in the field of Rock 'n' Roll. Rick Wakeman said something similar in a rockumentary called YesYears.
I don't know what you define these days as proggressive. Years ago, before the 'heavy metal' label was coined, we used to think of bands like Yes, Deep Purple, Led Zep, ELP, and Hendrix as proggressive, or 'heavy proggressive'. Of the bands I've mentioned, Deep Purple were probably the most competent, esp their 'in rock' album.
Yes (of course), King Crimson, ELP, Gentle Giant, Genesis, I love them all. well, i only like the first king crimson actually, and i only really like ELP's Taurkus album. And i only like genesis with peter.
Its all just names man. Tags to put us in boxes. Forget about boundaries. Free your mind and let the music flow. Peace, UD
