People talk about the Derek and the Dominos curse. Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident one year after the album Layla was released, and drummer Jim Gordon, who went insane and spent the rest of his life in prison for murdering his mother, died in 2023. The bassist Carl Radle died at age 37 of kidney failure due to the effects of drinking and drugs, and in 1991 Eric Clapton lost his 4-year-old son Conor, who fell from the 53rd floor of a skyscraper in New York. Bobby Whitlock seems to be the only band member to escape the curse.
The Phlorescent Leech. I saw Flo and Eddie with Frank Zappa during his tour while recording for 200 Motels. Probably 1970. It was in the gym of a small "one red light college town" and there was some hang up so Flo and Eddie did an impromptu acrobatic skit as the "Famous Zanirini Brothers" or some such. They rolled around on the stage and jumped up and down for awhile until the band got organized. Years later i saw them give a concert at Hershey Park and got to talk to them about a Turtles box set I have. Red vinyl, never been played. ($185 to $244 on Amazon). Also got their autograph. Saw them again in Lancaster, Pa at the American Music Theater. RIP.
I once saw Flo and Eddie around 1976, as backup band for Stephen Stills. This was a few years after leaving Zappa and the Mothers and forming their own band. Still funny as shit!
I'm usually "one toke over the line"...fun place to be... Nixon put Shipley on his enemies list due to the song. Amazing how many musicians censored themselves in the 60s, early 70s. Govt put pressure on record companies just like they're putting pressures on media now by suing them or holding up mergers like they're stagecoaches!
