yeh it could get worse...my friends and family could get killed and I would regard that as worse....just because the politics don't have any immediate impact on you doesn't mean that these uprisings and revolutions don't cost someone their lives...you had better be sure of what you are doing before you enter this time i think since what you are facing is originally of your own creation...just try and think about the people that your political ideals are catching inbetween...do they really care for what you are thinking or would they rather you got out of their face and let them get on in the world and to achieve these changes for themselves in their own time in a more long lasting stable way....
haha. i don't know about worthwhile, just obvious. seriously though, the Japanese, with the Axis already crushed and the Allies surrounding the mainland, would have had to surrendered in a few months. Now we are haunted for eternity.
Thats nice talk, but changes are never going to ocur in Iran. The Iranians don't want the US's help, but they want help. Iranian citizens can't intervene in their government, yes people would die if we intervene, people are dying if we don't intervene, journalists are being tortured, and thrown away for ever, womens rights are being repealed even further. What about The Sudan? Should we allow that government to keep up gang raping, murdering, and torturing policies toward the ethnic population? Millions of people have been displaced and are starving, and tens of thousands are being murdered. Do we care about blood as long as its not on our hands?
The Ottoman empire doesn't refute what I said because it only made up a portion of the middle east, struggled to overwhelm the Byzantine empire for hundreds of years, and once it had become what we call the Ottoman Empire, it only enjoyed stablilty for about 150 years, until the 1650's when it became constantly engaged in struggles with Europe, Russia, and other Arab people's. Thats like saying, well you can't call the Mongol Empire chaos... bigness doesn't mean stability.
And it was much more stable then Europe in the middle ages, but this doesn't change the fact that The Sudans a violent hellhole today.
I know from your later post that you meant Iraq, but it's funny you should mention Iran in the context of democracy. They actually had one in the 50's, until Rockefeller and maybe one or two other capitalist pigs got the CIA to depose the elected government and reinstate the Shah. Is it any wonder they hate our fucking guts?
Since you're not old enough to be likely to remember without looking it up, the administration at that time was a Republican one, namely Eisenhower and Nixon. Of the two, Tricky Dick seems like the one most likely to have been in on this, just as he and Kissinger were complicit in the overthrow of the democratically elected Allende administration in Chile to install the fascist Pinochet, because letting socialism have a chance to succeed under a democracy would have threatened all the capitalist propaganda we'd been taught all those years.
The US and the soviets were in a satellite building race for 45 years... sometimes it worked out for the best, sometimes it didn't.
The Iranians (meaning the people, not the government) have, by and large, forgiven the United States for its admittedly deplorable actions during the 1950s. The Iranians today are probably the most pro-Western people in the Middle East, with the possible exception of Lebanon and of course Israel. I'm fairly confident in saying that there is almost no chance the Iranians would vote for a theocracy like the one they currently have, or a terrorist government like Algeria did. And I think the democrats in Iran, for the most part, welcome any support from the United States.
hahahha! despite my opinion on the issue (i see both sides) THIS was funny Well before canceliing democracy a little while ago, Russia was making a lot of progress too. If things were really that bad, you'd have been arested by the federales for being a terrorist years ago.
One of Russia's mistake was to model themselves after the example of Reagan and Bush and thus equate corrupt capitalism with democracy. We got the Shrub, they got (Ras)Putin.
In a month or so, I'll be changing my location to yours. The job market here sucks! I made the same move 15 years ago, for the same reason, and only returned to accept a position on the same project that was the only real job I had here back then too. For a blue state, the employers are by and large red-state (or -neck), even in professional types of jobs.
Regarding Iran, I know from Clinton's book that he made the effort in his apology to them for our nation's conduct back then. I hope Bush doesn't destroy any good will that arose as a result, as he's done with many of our allies.
