Had a dabble on an acoustic years ago and piano. Then moved on to a Bass Guitar and finally settled on the Drums. Learnt to play by reading music...

I've been progressing more on keyboard than guitar. I just play whatever sounds good. If I hit upon a familiar riff I will try to figure out the rest of the song, or I will transform the riff into something else, which I enjoy more.

I like rephrasing a riff, making it my own. No copyright worries that way.

Everyone's a drummer it seems. As I improve my drumming, my keyboard playing improves. I don't have a drum kit. I use my keyboard or anything that makes a sound.

I do have pads on my Akai MKII pro but rarely use them or the MK. My keyboard has rythym, as well as other band accompaniment. One day I'll have to let someone hear me play, lol.

On another note, I'm using Studio One software. Anyone else using that? I should start another thread on music software.

Funny thing, I got a studio one demo like a decade ago, it had everything except mastering. Amazingly It still works, never had to pay!

I’ve been using Cakewalk by Bandlab, but they’ve stopped it working, so I’ve reluctantly moved onto Sonar, which is a pretty seamless transition. However, there are features hidden behind a paywall. I don’t appear to need those features, but things being as they are, I expect more of the free features to become paid for features, over time. My requirements for a DAW are pretty simple - I need multitrack recording, basic editing - cut/copy/paste/fade in/out/import/export/vsts.. I think that’s it. I don’t do anything fancy, and I don’t record all the time, and I’m by no means professional, so I just need something fairly simple that works, and is free.. I’m just recording my own simple ideas, for my own pleasure - nobody else ever hears it, so I don’t need a bells and whistles (expensive) DAW..
Cakewalk - sorry, Sonar suits me for now, but if something came along that was free, and working, forever, I’d maybe jump to that.. I just have this nagging feeling they’re going to do something shitty, down the line.. why else would they have killed cakewalk?
    Sorry for rambling..

I've only ever used Audacity software for recording and mixing, which is free. It does multitracking editing and I used that a lot when I wanted to put stuff up on YouTube. Can't remember what I used for mastering when I did my CD, but I don't think it was Audacity. It may have been an Apple product, but I can't remember now as it was 13 years ago.

I can understand why. Our son plays drums in a heavy metal band and when he brought his hobby home, we had to upgrade the double glazing in his room and add seals around the door. :(

I’ve only ever used Audacity to trim samples to make loops. Maybe that’s how I was introduced to it, or as an audio editing tool.. and I can’t get that idea out of my head. I’ll have to try recording a full piece, using it, and see how it goes..

I don't play anymore, but I used to play piano, guitar, bass and my first instrument was a set of drums which didn't last too long because it drove my dad nuts.
