My Favorite Things is a song from Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music. And it is a lilting waltz that celebrates simple joys and finds comfort in familiar things. In the movie the song is sung by Maria and the children during a thunderstorm. Its key shifts from minor to major, symbolizing a transition from melancholy to happiness.

My Favorite Things emphasizes the power of positive thinking and finding joy in everyday objects and experiences. The lyrics list a variety of simple pleasures, such as raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens that can lift one's spirits during difficult times. While not initially conceived as a holiday song My Favorite Things has become a popular choice for holiday recordings and performances, due to its themes of warmth and comfort. And it has been covered by such artists as Barbra Streisand and John Legend.

In essence My Favorite Things is a song that celebrates the beauty and joy found in simple things, offering solace and inspiration to listeners of all ages and backgrounds. Its enduring appeal lies in its relatable lyrics, memorable melody, and the transformative power of its jazz interpretations.

And, the following is the complete list of Fräulein Maria's favorite things in the movie:

    • Raindrops on roses.
    • Whiskers on kittens.
    • Bright copper kettles.
    • Warm woolen mittens.
    • Brown paper packages tied up with strings.
    • Cream-colored ponies.
    • Crisp apple strudels.
    • Doorbells.
    • Sleigh bells.
    • Schnitzel with noodles.
    • Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings.
    • Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes.
    • Snowflakes that stay on her nose and eyelashes.
    • Silver-white winters that melt into springs.

Because she explains, when the dog bites, when the bee stings or when she's just feeling sad, she simply remembers her favorite things. And then she doesn't feel so bad.

My mom loves musicals. I remember her introducing me to Sound of Music and loving the songs.

Back in the 1970s when I was still living in Bristol, one of the cinemas ran just this film for over 5 years!!!!

There was one woman who was such a fan of the film that she turned up every day to see it. After a year or so, the management of the cinema gave her a special free ticket that allowed her to see the film as often as she liked without paying, as having her there was good publicity.

I'm not sure, but I think the run even got into the Guinness Book of Records for the longest continuous run of a single film.
