I was recently offered some sub-contracted work restoring OEM car parts by zinc-plating them. I've seen some basic theory about this, but could anyone explain an actual setup? For $19 an hour I'm willing to learn anything. ;)

I believe it's an inferior electrolytic process compared to hot-dip galvanised zinc.

    ...from a Google search

Hot dip galvanizing is far superior to electroplating as far as corrosion protection goes, but the surface finish is pretty ugly.

So are you planning to plate these parts just for appearance, or for corrosion resistance?

  5. and what about the physical weakening of the steel that occurs with hot dip? Does that occur with electroplate?

Weakening from heat, no, but electroplating can cause hydrogen embrittlement...

I had hydrogen problems whilst electoplating a while back. Also I would point out that electroplating is quite hazardous. People working in electroplating plants arent famed for their longevity. So if you go the electroplating route try and use a fume cupboard. Also watch out for cyanide it can be used in some electroplatig procedures.
