Well for a pattern make a 2 squares (same size), 1 or 2 long pieces of fabric several inches wide by as long as possible and a 3rd square the size of the first squares plus the width of the long strap (this will be your flap) Sew the long strip between the 2 squares making a pouch (w/ or w/o strap depending on how long the strip is) add strap if wanted longer, Then sew the larger square (rectangle) to one od the squares... Easy... If thats what you want to make... (i hope i didnt confuse you... i have a hard time fallowing directions never mind giving them ;))

I would make it out of a heavier fabric like corduroy.. That way it will hold up and not fall apart as easilly.... Light weight fabrics like calico are cool looking but can make really flimsy bags :( (Which isnt bad though depending on what you use it for... I keep alot of stuff in mine and it gets tossed around alot so i opt for more durable fabric)

Just get two different materials--one psychedelic for the outside, one plain fabric for the inside. Cut two rectangles, fold them inside-out and sew all the way around the edges except for on one side. Flip it so the good side is on the outside. Fold over the unsewn edge so there's a clean seam, and sew that. That'll be the main purse part.
For the handle, cut one long piece of the fabric, sew it inside out. Get a crochet hook and stick it through the two unsewn ends. Pull it out so, again, the good side is on the outside.Fold over the rough edges, and sew each end to the two corners at the top of the bag. I suggest sewing them about 3 times, so it'll hold. I made one of these in my freshwoman year of high school. I'm a junior now, and the bag is still in perfect condition.
