I just bought a new cellphone today, this is the first time I've owned one. Its really cool its got a camera and you can make and recieve calls LoL. I was just wondering if anyone else owns a celly and if you think they are a good or bad thing. I think they have there pro's and con's.
I used to have one, but I never used it so I got rid of it. Personally, I'm annoyed by them. Every idiot out there is always on their phone...how much could you possibly have to say! Most of it is so trivial too. I'm annoyed when I'm talking face to face with someone about something important or interesting, and their phone rings, and they just put me on "hold" and talk about the most banal stuff with the caller. No one can just let the phone ring. And the whole driving on the phone is dumb, and unsafe. But worst of all are the two-way systems. People always have the volume up too fucking high, and I don't want to hear your stupid conversation about American Idol or whatever other stupid thing your talking about. It's bad enough that I have to hear one side of it. Worst of all, it seems as an excuse to not see people. You say "i call you all the time, I don't need to get together with you". Communication is increasing (sort of, it's communication about nothing usually) but actual human contact is decreasing. Also, it's an excuse to never be by yourself in some peace and quiet. Aside from TV, radio, internet, etc etc, it's hard to find any time for yourself, for quiet time. You start feeling uncomfortable in the silence, and you call someone up to talk about nothing. I feel silence and self reflection are important, but it's becoming less common. "hey, i was bored so I called you. whats up..." seems to be the most common phrase people say on the phone. Well, enough ranting...
Totally agree TrippinBTM, I bought my phone for emergency purposes only, I would hate to get into a crash and not be able to contact anyone. But, buying a phone for the purpose of "everyone has one" I guess I'll get one to makes no sense. The worst part are ringtones! riding the train to work and I hear 50 Cents "in da club" go off about 20 times, its really ridiculous.
Recently replaced my first cellphone with a fancy Motorola camera phone (hey, it was free!), which has far more features than I will ever use (or have the time to figure out HOW to use). The old phone (straight analog Nokia) was replaced because the keypad was starting to get intermittent and the display was going out. I generally use a cellphone as a CAR PHONE, and almost never carry the thing with me outside my car unless I am expecting a call from someone in particular. If I could still get one of those "old school" analog mobile phones (the ones with the outside antenna that you actually needed to INSTALL in the car), I would actually prefer it, because they almost never dropped a call due to poor reception. I find cellphones generally annoying in public places, especially when the ringers are set to maximum volume.
cellphone is so convenient coz i hate finding public phones.. they are either spoilt vandalised or to no avail.. and sometimes you find that it's not the right phone for the card you had.. (this happen where i live - Asia). Also with it i wont get lost.. can conference anywhere anytime.. can email on the go.. save lotsa times! i think you need to explore a bit more.. however.. if u had it and don't find it exist.. i think... most probably u really dun need it.. given that kinda environment u are in.. and shaba says.. buying a phone for emergency purposes.. i agree.. coz i'm an extreme impatient person.. haha
wow man.. does anyone remember when cellphones first started out as car phones? like they were only in cars and only refered to as "car phones" it was like the coolest thing when i was wee little. those things were HUGE too. but yeah, my cellphone is for emergencies and gets used plenty for them, other than that i am never on it... i wonder how long it will take for payphones to dissapear, i remember when there used to be a line at the payphone at the movies for kids calling to get picked up, now the poor phone is all alone and abandoned in a corner. as dependent as people have become with cellphones these days, its hard to believe we ever could have lived with out them, and that was just a few years ago! walking through campus btwn classes EVERY person i see is on a cell phone, god forbid you have a few moments alone to walk in nature and think to yourself, or think nothing at all... its kinda sad that people just cant be alone with themselves anymore, not even for a 5 min walk from science to english.
my cell phone is the only phone I have. I don't text message people with it or get online with it or anything like that. But it is my house phone. It's cheaper for me that way anyway. I couldn't do that in my old appartment because the phone I had at that time sucked service-wise, but now I have damn good service. So yeah, I don't just use my phone for emergencies. But I do call up my parents, and my friends...who all live in different states. And my husband used to live an hour away, and now is halfway across the world, so anytime he's going to call me, I'm going to drop everything to get that call thank you vera much . I need my phone to stay connected with everyone I know and love. Much cheaper than a phoneline and long distance. Perhaps many of those people on campus are the same way? That's why I'm so far away from those I love...school. Perhaps some of those people cherish having the freedom of never having to miss a much awaited call from their loved one who's far away and in a possibly dangerous place? It's easy to say that most people are talking about stupid things, but you've only heard a few conversations out of the TONS of people who have cellphones. There are many reasons to get them too, besides emergencies, which is why my mother bought me one when I started driving on my own. My reasons grew by leaps and bounds and I can't imagine living without mine now. I like fun ringtones too so .
oh yeah im positive there are students who are catching up with loved ones on what little time they have to, my family lives in this town and i would still call my boyfriend just to check up on him during breaks at times, or see how a sick relative was doing, but it was just wierd thinking about how a few years ago when we didnt have that convenience people where forced to just be with themselves, and we still got through it because at the end of the day you could just call someone on a house phone.
I only just got a cellphone recently and I use it to call my boyfriend. Mainly it's because he lives 1000 miles away and I can call him nights or weekends for free rather than paying long distance charges. My mom sends me text messages at school to remind me of things as well. It really bothers me seeing 14 and 15 year olds with cell phones though. Unless you drive or participate in afterschool activities (like band where you HAD to have a cell phone or borrow one to get rides), then there's no point.
i dun fancy fun ringtones as i find it an annoying silent killer! there are unconsiderate people who switches to max singing britney spear early morning while u are trying to sleep in the train.. I normally use silent+vibration mode, even if it's not on silent mode, it's on the most conventional ring ring mode.. Well.. i tried those fun fun ringtones before.. but end up having many missed calls.. i dunno why.. i just couldn't hear it.. hahaha..
I love my cellphone. I got rid of my cordless phones and answering machines. I went completely wireless about 2 years ago. It's cheaper too!
My cellphone has a gps, yours probably does too (this probably belongs in the paranoia thread but...) if the government ever goes sideways (anarchy, massive coup, you do some shit that you really don't want to be tracked down after having done) they can hunt you with that, I don't really use my cell phone much, When I'm on the road I do but day to day it sees virtually no use.
I absolutely HATE being called... even if it's a friend calling (most know and don't call me). I'm a recluse and don't want to be disturbed when I'm by myself. I like to go out and meet people, and chat in forums when I chose to go there, but I absolutely don't want others to initiate contact when I'm in my home. I have a cell phone for emergencies, and because we can't easily call out from work (we gotta call the office first and have them dial the number, which is a pain if you wanna do something like make a doctor's appointment). But only my mom has the number and I never have it turned on... I'm not even sure how to pick it up, I tried that once when I got it but have only used it to call out since, and it's never rung apart from that one time I dialed the number myself to try it out (my mom doesn't feel the same about being called at home, but she also dislikes being called when out in public, shopping or whatever, so she won't use it except for real emergencies).
