My dreadies are two weeks old and I love them. But, they keep on unraveling. I have been using an organic herbal shampoo and I hope that's not the problem

Here are some pics. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh, and the back bottom looks a little wet because I had taken a bath this morning and while my dreads were up and out of the water some of the water still got at my hair. lol

Babe stop panicking!! seriously! I've got ones that are like thta still at the bottom after a year. they WILL knott up you just have to be patient. Get with the playing about with them and just be patient.

The only advice i can egve other than that is look at the shampoo contents if is got anything moisturising in it then i'd say stop using it. Things like Coco butter moistures :)

I've had my dreads for about 6 months and I use orangic tea tree shampoo and I have that exact same problem. I'm just patiently waiting for them to start knotting

hehe I spent quite a long time standing infront of the organic and natural soaps and shampoos at the store. My biggest problem was so many of them had moisturizers in them. I think one soap didn't have any moisturizers in it at all but it stunk really bad (tar soap). Kind of a mix between stale old cigars, burned charcoal, and something else I can't place. lol

Anyways, I was told in one of the forums to avoid shampoos or soaps with sodium laurel or something like that. I just looked that the ingredients of the shampoo I had bought and it has that.

I've started backcombing the dreads that need more help every morning. I know that they're very young and it'll take time (5 months or more) before they really look good. I just want to do what I can to help it along. lol Also, I'm about to have a baby any day now (EDD is 3/5) and so looking forward to having one less thing to worry about. lol

    Awwwww..

Just remember dreads have there own mind and do exactly what u don’t want them too.. sort of like some relation ships between teenagers and parents. hahaha so let them run free and be what they want to be.. in the end they will be beautiful! mine are at 8 and a half months and they are more straggly then when i did them..... the actual dreads are defended and knottier but in-between i have PLENTY more lose hairs then i did when i started... in saying that it may be years until they full mature.. but time is the key.. and no stress..

Plus they look pretty goof.. I wouldn’t worry, this is the “withdrawal” stage for some people, so stay strong and love you and your hair…

Oh and let us know when u have your baby!!!!!

I’m off to drumming now!!! Take care

I was thinking about a lot of stuff and playing with my dreads as I did. And I noticed something. They feel dirty/oily. I have oily hair and usually use a deep cleansing shampoo. My favoite was always Herbal Essences because my hair felt clean after washing it. And it shouldn't feel this greasy at the tips right now. So, I'm thinking that the new all natural shampoo I bought isn't getting my hair clean enough.

I can't afford to buy any of the others right now and I don't know if Henry's carries Dr. Bronners (didn't see it). So, I'm going to use the Herbal Essences one. I was using it before I bought this other stuff and I didn't have this problem (only used it once...but it feels like there was a difference). When I can afford to I'll try something else.

So, now I have the problem of finding a shampoo/soap that is not only natural but is also deep cleansing. *sigh* I remember from when I made soaps and shampoos that when it comes to being all natural "deep cleansing" is hard to do. You need something like pine in the shampoo because natural shampoos don't strip your hair of oils the way comercial ones do. They just clean the dirt and any excess oil.

I could always buy that tar soap and if I don't like the way I smell after I use it I could just use incense or make a fragrant spray to help cover it up. hmmm....Nag Champa (sp?) has a soap too. I wonder if that would work...

    *hugs*

P.S. Oh and Fleasy...having kids is great! well...at least I think so. A lot of work but well worth it. :D

Babe if oil is the problem use sea salt water or lemon juice and water. Just avoid ones like herbal essences and other chemical based products (just my opinion here) The reason you hair MIGHT be more oily at the moment is because of A) your hormones, being pregnant often effects oily skin etc, and B) yes when you come off of chemical products your scalp needs time to adjust to going back to producing the normal amout of oil. Because your old shampoo would strip your haird natural oils it;s ajjusted over the years to produce more oils to make up for this. Now it has to get used to not needing to do this any more.

Actually, my hair is normally oily. Since I've been pregnant it hasn't been as oily as usual. The all natural herbal shampoo I was using just wasn't getting my hair clean. The oils were left on my hair and it felt dirty, down at the tips. You can kind of see it in one of the pics...though I'm not sure if that's oil or just a shadow. But, the deep cleansing of herbal essences leaves it feeling clean and my hair is knotting better. I'm going to try something else when I have the money to buy it.

Anyways, my hair is knotting up again. Because of how clean it feels now I can probably go longer than 3 or 4 days between washings. Hopefully that'll help a bit.

    *hugs*

I would rather not buy it though.

BTW...my hair is unraveling more. I'm getting so frustrated. I don't want to take the dreads out as the ones that are staying knotted are wonderful! But the ones that are comming out are driving me insane! Every day I have to reknot them and every morning I wake up and they're unknotted.

I am going to sleep with a fleece thingie on my head. Unfortunatly, no matter how tight I make it (within reason) it falls off in the middle of the night. I have my dreads pulled back anyway and I don't know if it's from moving around or what.

When the baby comes I'm not going to have the patience or the time or the energy to spend an hour or two fixing dreads every morning. I don't have the time for it now! Even when just relaxing and working on them when I can is getting annoying.

*sigh* I was really hoping that this would be no mainenance and it's driving me insane that it's not. I know it takes time. But, it doesn't seem like the back of my head is ever going to knott. Maybe I should try and see if I could find someone to help me with them. :p I only know one person though and she has 3 kids to chase around. So, she can't exactly spend all day on my hair. ROFL

You dont have to spend any time on your dreads!... dread locks are natural! let your hair dread lock itself.

*hugs* Thanks guys. It's just frustrating. I love the way dreads look and have wanted them for a long time. So, I'm not going to give up on them just yet. But, in the meantime it looks sooooo messy. lol

I'm just afraid that if I do nothing I'll wind up with one massive knot. lol Plus, I would like for it to look halfway decent when my mom comes to visit. I don't really care what she thinks...I just don't want to hear it. But, if it doesn't look "quite right" then oh well. :)

Seriously i hardly ever back comb, my hair made most progress when i stopped back combing and just left it alone. If you just make sure you rip the dreads appart to keep them seperate then you will be fine :)

Thanks hon. I took a shower last night and after I dried my hair I looked at my dreads and noticed that they're actually looking better. It's weird. Sometimes they all seem to be falling apart but when I really look at them they're not as bad.

You need to have your baby! :) You're nesting, and your emotions are in overdrive....poor girl. I remember that time, I folded and refolded baby clothes for hours and would get so upset over little things. Instead of obessing over baby clothes, like I did, you're obsessing over your dreads. They really will get better with time. Mine are about 2 months old, I still have unraveling and loose hairs. The last time I had dreads, it took at least 6 months for them to look knotty enough to be dreads. When is your due date? Do you have names picked out? You are so blessed!
