Do you truly think that they exist?

I cannot possibly imagine a more dull form of human categorism.

Do humans naturally feel the need to label everything, including a personality?

You have all of these types flying around: A, B, Extrovet, Introvert, etc...

People are labeled by them, and often, label themselves.

Do you think that they actually "exist", that our personality can be accuratly labeled by these generalizations?

You can combine a couple of personalities to create a single one (like some online personality tests do), yet, even with that... is that truly us?

Can we, as humans, actually understand our personality well enough to label it with generalizations?

I took a personnality test a while ago which told me I was a "Submissive, creative, introverted Abstract Dreamer.." Hmm.. the description seemed to fit, but I think it's impossible (and rather stupid) to categorize people into different personality types. Everyone is different.

Please note (This does not apply to townies or chavs.)

A friend of mine has an online personality test thing. I'm not sure if I believe in it, but he's told me about some of the research he went through and it was pretty extensive.

Plus, I never got the introvert/extrovert thing. I've heard people explain it in two different ways, and I jump between the two depending on the definition given, lol.

with all the moving i've done, i can tell you that personality types definitely exist. we all will find our place in the social heirarchy, and our personalities determine where we fit. even the "people who don't fit in" are still residing within a social heirarchy, whether they like it or not. i've seen the same people over and over again, and have learned to deal with them all the same ways. while there will always be minor variations, every society looks the same to me.

I can't believe this would even be a question. OF COURSE humans naturally feel the need to label everything... otherwise there wouldn't be anatomy classes.

    there are defiantly personality types.

for example, the type A and type B personality thing is very real.... of course, it's not CLEAR CUT but generally people's PERSONALITY (which is long-standing and mostly unflexible) falls closer to one spectrum then the other.

there are also personality types that stick with a person pretty much through life.... like slow to warm up babies, etc....

then there are personality disorders and if you have ever been around a borderline personality, you wouldnt dispute it.

HOWEVER, like what's his face says... his name starts with an S. (hehe).... there really are no mental disorders, its just a list of symptoms that psychiatrists use to label people and make things easier.

er, i could go on n on but ill shuddup now. :p

Personality types are not supposed to used as labels that define people but the strategy they naturally chose to deal with things. The "labels" are merely patterns that the inventors of a style of personality typing recognized.
Of course you're supposed to learn different kind of things about yourself depending on the kind of personality typing (type A or B, enneagram, MBTI, etc).
Identifying yourself with X or Y is just useless and limiting.

Humans always label everything and that's just the way it is and always will be. Nothing can be done about it, and I use my energy worrying about bigger things.

I think that there are personality types, they aren't clear cut of course, and people don't fit perfectly into them. But I agree with KC, people seem to be about the same no matter where you go. There are always the same types.

On another note, I wish that I was a different type than what I am ;)

    Bravesirubin,

That certainly is quite brave of you to post. I wonder, have ever met anyone with Alzheimer’s? Have you ever met anyone with Schizophrenia? Have you ever met a serial killer? Have you ever met an obsessive compulsive? An agoraphobic? (tee hee) Have you ever met a girl?

The world is a variant place. There are in fact different personalities that have to be labeled for important purposes.

You say that there isn’t a duller form of ‘human categorism’ and in the next breath wonder if those categories can be combined into a single category.

Pardon me for saying, but one is duller than many.

Of course different personalities exist. Of course we have the grounds to ‘label’ them. You should not have to look further than these fora to know it. People aren’t faking it. People can’t be the same. DNA prohibits it.

I know where you are coming from. But take it from me, knowing how long you and I have been here (and following, the number of posts of mine you have read) it is normal and couldn’t be moreso.

But take it for what it is worth.

I tried to resist being labled...but apparently there is a category for those who resist the box as well.

There are 2 types of individuals and all human beings, can be categorized into one of these two groups:

    1) Morning Person

    2) Not a Morning Person

I've tried labeling myself, and I've found it just doesn't work, and I've completely given up. There's so many different characteristic that go into people, that everyone is a mix of every personality type out there. You are definately much stronger in some areas than others, but the weaker areas are still there. I dunno, thats what I think; people can't be labeled.

Duncan and OSF, I was not directly suggesting anything, I was asking question to provoke a discussion.

I agree that labeling is necessary, yet I still disagree with the fact that these commonly used "personality" types acuratly describe a person. A person, in my opinion, is always a mix of all of these types, rarely a type is as dominating that the person could be labelled that.
