Hey guys. I'm new to the boards. My name's Steph. Anyway, I was sitting around the other day talking about music, and I realized, I'm not as musically "educated" as I once thought I was. So I've decided to work on that. But I need help. If you could give me a list of say, the 10 most essential artists and their essential songs, that would rock my socks off! or ya know... if you want to give me more, that's cool too. I'm not really into rap or hip hop, or much country. But everything else is free game. Thanks kids!

    See ya on the boards....

    Steph

Hi Steph, welcome to the forums. What genres are you already educated on? I don't really know much about music but I'm sure I could suggest some stuff you'll enjoy!

I think you would get 10 different songs from every memeber here..
But I think you should listen to The Mars Volta, because thats all I listen to these days..

Well, with your name, it looks like you got the Dead down. But i dont really know how much you do know.
if you've never heard em, check out the Velevet underground. check out tunes like, "Sister ray" "Rock n' Roll" and "I'm waiting for the man". its some pretty hardcore stuff.

Great question ! Music is subjective except in my case I have THE definitive list ! Actually I dont have a list just a few suggestions. Try a little of everything ! Blues covers lots of different styles and so does jazz just like rock has many different sounds.

Van Morrison is soulful and poetic, try These are the Days.
Allman Brothers Eat a Peach is nice.
Motown anything ! Marvin Gaye Whats Going On is sweeet !
Los Lobos, theyre all over the place.
Etta James Life Love & the Blues....whooo !
If your (in the mood) Teddy Pendergrass will get you there, listen to Turn Out the Lights or Love TKO.
Cherry Poppin Daddies is swingish & funky, remember variety will get you to open your musical ideology and expose you to new sounds.
Neville Brothers Yellow Moon is really good BIG sound funk & jam !
Pat Metheny Imaginary Day...fusion jazz at its best !
Of course anything Carlos Santana is spiritually invigorating.

The list could go on & on but if you have a used record store pick up something you wouldnt normally buy, for 6 bucks even if you dont like it what the hell give it away or you might get lucky and find a gem, and ask those guys at the store they know the music......have fun and its always better when you crank it up !!!

I put two lists together that each of us made in another thread about '60s music. I think it's pretty solid for a very well-rounded '60s pop/rock collection.

Great! The Who Sell Out is one of my favorite albums. Have you listened to A Quick One? It's one of my favorite albums of 1966. The early Who had an uncanny ability to blend wacky comedy with great pop and rock music.

Yeah, it's my favorite Who album -- and quite possibly my favorite album of all-time -- but it seems for most people to be a 'love it or hate it' kind of thing. Most people either hail it as genius or dismiss it as garbage.

Tommy is genious, but I don't like how it sounds all that much... I enjoy A Quick One and The Who Sell Out much more.

rofl, death metal posts. she's into the dead, so I guess classic rock is something you like. you should listen to all hendrix, especially band of gypsys :) I recommend Soulive to everyone, cause they are the best band touring right now. (I am prepared for all the shocked faces of SCI, moe., mmw, umphrey's fans)
