Haven't posted in this forum before but I am kind of defined as a Hereditary witch I think (I hate being lumped into a category) my mother was a witch, as was my grandmother and her mother (I don't know how far it goes back but the female side were always considered 'healers'). My mother and sister haven't practised since they were teenagers but I still do and still plan on passing it down to my children. My grandmother taught me everything I know although unfortunately she's not with us anymore. I don't practise much anymore and use it mainly as an almost homeopathic skill, making remedies and balms for friends, family and myself but using the guidance and natural healing I have from being a witch in the process. I haven't as yet met another witch where it runs in their family, and I am the only one left in my family who practises so I am solitary.

So I was wondering what type of witch everyone would call themselves and also what you use your sensitivities or craft for? Also whats the general feeling about Hereditary Witches.

I feel somewhere inside me that I might be a hereditary witch, at least from my birthmother... is there a way to find out?

Don't have any real feelings about hereditary witches, must be nice to be able to trace a lineage and learn from tradition though.

My mother is a healer; in that she does massage, reflexology etc. Seem to have some of those talents myself (certainly interested in it) but that's about it.
Am the first in my family to be called a witch [in the true pagan sense] and would like to continue that if future offspring are interested.

As for a category, argh that's hard....
    Pretty eclectic
Leaning toward Celtic [guess because that's my heritage]
    Solitary
Pagan, possibly wiccan but am not mad keen on that label.

    Pagan for short :)

i have a question....You know how in some other cultures
a shaman, or healer, or witch, if you will, is described sometimes
as a person who is in touch with the gods, who hears them, feels them
and well, i don't really know. there are so many things i dont know, i
just go by instinct...but what about people in this country who
are labeled as schitzo, or bipolar, dont you think they'd be 'labeled'
    a shaman in another culture??

Best bet would probably to find your birthmother or someone who was close to her and ask... :p

I'm the first wiccan in a long line of Catholics - yes, my home is fun come every sunday - But hereditary witches I think are very awesome, whether or not you like being lumped into that term...

I dont consider myself a witch or anything, I would be more of a shaman.

I'm not a hereditary witch that I know of... but a lot of people are, even though it has skipped a few generations because of persecution or just lack of availability. These days a lot more natural witches are discovering their powers because witchcraft is more accessible.

I am a hereditary witch. My lineage is recorded back 5 generations to Rushport Ireland. While it is nice to have this history, I personally believe that being hereditary doesn't make me any better than someone who has been practicing for a few months or many years. We can all learn new things everyday.

hey you know christianity is a new on the scene, so if your decended from gaelic people there is with out doubt "witches" in your ancestory, and most likely not as far back as you might think. the christen or die attitude that prevailed for awhile didnt stop them, only made them hide, and many of the settlers here in america left eurupe for that very reason
