I would suggest getting a Bernina sewing machine. THat is what we use at the shop and i love them. You probably want to stay away from a quilting machine as they tend to be for lighter weight stuff. The Bernina is a workhorse and good for just about anything.

An Embroidery machine is for doing embroidery only not sewing. I would stay away from those for now, unless you are wanting to lay out several thousand dollars for a good one that does both embroidery and regular sewing.

I would go talk to the sewing machine lady at your local sewing shop like Joanne's or Hancock's. They are pretty knowlegeble and can really help you find a machine that has the features you want. They also let you try the machines out in the store.

I also have a Husqevarna Viking that I am pretty happy with. I got a great discount on it because it was a floor model. So you should ask about that also when you go. If you are looking to make clothes and have a machine that can handle bulky seams look to spend about 500 bucks on your machine. I would not get a cheap machine.

A serger would be a good investment down the road if you want to make clothes to sell.

You may want to consider keeping using your father's machine. Depending on how much you're going to be making, and what kind of stuff, maybe get a serger. I use my mom's singer sewing machine, it's from 1968 and works really well, and I just got a serger. It's a great way to go I think.

I'm getting my own sewing machine for my birthday (10 April, hint hint) and my mom's been coaching my dad on what kind to get. Get a good brand, like Singer or Elna. And don't get a cheapie because it'll just periodically break down.
I just finished a patchwork skirt today on my mom's Elna, and she works very well. Oh, and it was my grandma's originally, and is about 50 years old...That should tell ya something.
    Get a good, well-known brand.

Right now its put away in my dad's garage. I wish I could take it out but he has so much junk infront of it.
