I got ICQ thinking it might be cool to talk to some people who dont's have AIM, and I'm tired of it already. I already got a dozen spam messages, and I'm being bombarded by freaks left and right. Anyone else have ICQ and experience this?

Yes i used to have it, its worse then e-mail spam. I was spammed daily for some chick you wants to meet me " lets hook up ". Then it ends up being some crappy porn site that wants my credit card number. I have feeling its loaded with spy ware. Hard to trust anything that free on the internet.

Try Trillian instead...it has AIM, MSN, ICQ, and Y! all blended into one, neat, tidy little program. ;)

I have trillian pro and it roxs, it not only allows you to combine all you're IM's into one but allows you to run them all threw the same proxy. I still refuse to get an ICQ account. The trully shitty thing about ICQ (AIM has this option also) in my oppion is it's a p2p chat which is to say you're direct linked to the other person therefor revealing you're true ip #
1> Click the users Nickname on your contact list
2> Choose 'User information' or 'User details' or similar.
3> There should be a box stating their current or last IP. If it is blank...they have the IP masking feature on if its on go to dos promt type in netstat -a look at you're connection, and send a message and type netstat -a again, you will get there ip, easy huh?
lol I like the line nothing free is good, pretty much true in this case....

Well... I´ve had my ICQ account for years. I like it, even though I agree with the problems you state. Guess I´m in the minority.

I got ICQ and kept it for three days. It frickin' invaded my computer, there were ICQ icons EVERYWHERE... besides its a very unstable program, there's backdoors everywehre and it's sooo easy to hack from there... so just be very careful about who you talk to on there.

I've had ICQ for a long time but never use it Member # 144919774.

The spam is due to the fact that ICQ is meant to be very interfacable, and some peopel wrote spam interfaces for it :(

Well, at least now I know it's not just me. I think I'll keep ICQ, since there are people I talk to online who refuse to get AIM (just because they're not American), I'll just run Spybot more often and fuck with the spammers. It might be fun.

ICQ was the first IM I had....I found out I could go into prefrences and keep unknown users messaging me and what not....It's a big program and leaves little files behind that I have to clear up with System Mech...Yahoo does strange things to my PC......I just don't message a lot any more.....a lot of those people live in a fantasy world thinking they are going to get a piece off of ya when they are 10,000 miles away......lol
