Wow Seahorse, very brave. This is the best and most in-depth post I've seen you write in a long time. ***applauds*** Also, I agree with 90% of this post.

I don't understand what's all that hype about vaginas. You don't see men having 'Penis Monologues'. A vagina is just a sexual organ, nothing more. I think there was this like in the VM where they say "my vagina deserves to wear pearls" or something like that. Wtf? It's a slot designed for a penis to go in so that children can be created. Renaming valentine's day to vagina day? The hell is this? There already is a women's day, why make another one, and call it by such a strange name. There is nothing cute, powerful, special, witty or amazing about the vagina. Grow up.

Yeah, though, the parts of the monologues that have to do with women's rights and everything are correct to a large extent. I just find it to be a very stupid way of presenting them.

 

A feminist world? I think women are fucked up because of lots of other things, not growing up in a feminist world. Women would be a lot better off if they were raised in such an environment.

Anyway, back to the original topic.

The Vagina Monologues is a bit over the top, but overall, I think it's great. I agree that you can kinda figure it'll be vulgar, by the title & it's reputation for how long? I've read the screen play, but have never seen it live yet. I would love to though. Eve Ensler actually has a new book on body image that looks interesting.

I am a feminist-left wing, whatever label you would like to attach. I've been in a relationship with my bf for over 4 1/2 yrs. He's a conservative... I'm not a man-hater overall. I prefer bonding with women over men except for my bf & my best male friend. I think it does convey the message of lesbians,etc. but, doesn't mean I'm against it. My main beef with women is why do so many women choose men over eachother? (esp. if he is not worth it?) Do men choose us over men? I try to keep my loyalty towards all my female influences because most females I know don't. They drop everything for a guy, which I disagree with. Women need to live their lives, not have men live it for them.

Also, I don't remember the exact quote, but, " support for the patriarch"? Why? Because that's what we are used to? Why would Vagina Monologues of all things show support for the patriarch?

 

sorry.. I'm cursed with being nitpicky. If being black or Native was right, why are there so many problems with it? Just that bit seems like faulty logic to my brain.

Anywho, the rest of your post was full of wonderful points and good opinions, IMHO. I believe in gender equality, not in womyn being better than men.

And Michael - you actually made a post I agree with 100%! hurrah!

 

In many countries, freedom of speech, ability to marry who you love, being allowed to own property, if you are not a white rich male, feeling that slavery is WRONG and should be illegal, ect all not only "Had problems" with them, but were ILLEGAL.

Do you base what is right on what SOME PEOPLE feel is a "problem?" Is your entire life JUST living the status quo, and not THINKING?

So in your estimation, anything that "has problems" is inherently WRONG? YOUR life is "problem" free?

Hey, I make fucking pancakes all the time for my family. Your statemnts clueless and seeminly uneducated as to what a "feminist" is. But I think, from what I read, that you are not ready to learn, and that is SAD.

Do some reading that isn't assigned by your Church, You may actually LEARN something, and altbough that will break your insular bubble, it will be good for you. Insulating yourself against THOUGHT is NEVER good for you.

As for you comment on "divorce" did you know that Southern Evangelical Christians have a HIGHER divorce rate than ANYONE in this country? There's something that has "problems."

just to let everyone know, since i've been asked about 5 times, that NO i didn't know what to expect. I heard about the vagina monlogues only ONCE before, and i was only told that it was "good". When i got invited, it was a last minute thing, and something to do, and i went.

 

This is such bad logic that I didn't even finish reading the rest of your post.

There are people that have problems with black people, does that mean black people aren't right? There are people that have problems with christianity, does that mean christianity isn't right? There are people that have problems with eating meat, does that mean eating meat isn't right?

 

Well, seahorse, I accept that you may not have known. And in all honestly I also though the VM was a bit "Over the top" but that was the purpose of it. "Vagina day" LOL.

Sera Michelle, you said EXACTLY what I was saying. Amen sister. One must always consider the Status Quo and ponder it. Sometimes the Status Quo serves a good purpose, other times, it needs to be ignored, changed or trampled.

 

If you read my post, you'll see that I am talking particularly about using the sexual organ as a symbol of a gender. This is not what these men are doing at all. Never seen Vin Diesel say that his penis deserves to wear pearls.

Well actually you are wrong on this part. What about when men give names to their penises? "The Krull needs some lovin'!" ... or even TALK to their penises???

 

I think what Seahorse was trying to say was that any time we step out of God's plan, trouble comes. Not that any time someone thinks something is wrong, it is. And I agree with her 100%.Of course none of the things you mentioned are wrong, but in an upside-down and backwards world, some people think they are.

But Sera, you just bring up more good points when it comes to following God's will for our lives. God doesn't want us to hate other races. In fact, he commands us to love one another. So when someone hates a person of a different race, they are the ones stepping out of God's law and causing problems. Same goes with being a Christian... God wants us all to accept his Son. And he also gives us permission to eat animals for food. Some people don't eat meat, but there is certainly nothing wrong with it. So when people say that it is wrong to do so, they are the one's going against God's plan for man, and that's the problem!

 

Never met men like that, luckily. I think it's idiotic for men to do it, and equally idiotic for women to do it. I certainly know that my penis doesn't have a name. Why would I name body parts? I don't name my spleen, finger, tongue or ear. I don't even name my brain, even though I value it a lot more than my penis.

It isn't up to the rest of the world to live around your paticular religious ideals. If you have religious objections to something, then don't take part.

Seahorse, I appreciate and thank you for this topic. I admire you because you saw a play, it made you think, and you thought it was important enough to bring to the attention of other women. Bravo! Right on!! That is what being women is all about. Instead of cutting each other down, let's treat eachother and ourselves with respect and dignity.

However, I think it's important to realize that, as many people have pointed out, feminists are not all man-hating lesbians. I am a feminist because I believe in equal rights for women. I love men! I know some men who consider themselves feminists as well. The man-hating lesbian is a stereotype, and we all know that stereotypes aren't always true. And don't tell me that one cannot be a Christian and a feminist, since I am both.

I haven't seen the VM, so I can't say much about it. However, it's healthy for women to explore their sexuality. Women need to get over it and realize that we have rights to our own bodies.

No, a Christian woman stepped into a free speech women's issues forum. And like i said before, i didn't know what to expect when i was headed to the show as i had only heard about it once and heard it was "good". If i knew what i was in for, then i WOULDN'T have taken part.
