The "feminist" label came around because not long ago not everyone thought women should have equal rights, and women DIDN'T have equal rights. Thank those feminists, because without them you couldn't vote. Without them no one would recognize married women could be raped by their husbands. Without them there would be a lot of jobs you couldn't work (when my dad was a teenager McDonalds wouldn't even hire women). Without them there would be lots of schools who wouldn't enroll you. Women throughout history have been treated as second-class citizens or worse. Feminists have done alot for us women, and to dismiss them/us as man-hating lesbians that are somehow doing something wrong is just petty, uninformed, disrespectful, and unappreciative.
Brava, again, Sera!!!! Ever see a rocket or a bullet or a bomb?.............PHALLIC! My dh and I once were listening to Bush talk about the War and the number of times he and his people said the word "penetrate" or "penetration" was incredible.
well yay for feminists. why didn't they just call themselves "equalists"?? if equal rights is what they thought was most important. "Feminist" is a rediculous name for a group of people who want equal rights. just as rediculous as "masculists".
ah, now you're just being nitpicky. i liked and respected what you said earlier though, for the most part
it started off as feminism because they were fighting primarily for women's rights, since women were FAR FAR FAR from being treated equally (voting while being female is pretty cool n' all). Modern feminism is more about equality than purely the promotion of women's rights, though that can be a huge chunk of it. Personally, the biggest component of being a "feminist" for me is believing that I should be treated as a person, respected for who I am, and that gender shouldn't play a role in that.
"Feminism" encompasses a spectrum of beliefs, from moderate to extreme. Besides the article I cited earlier, check out: http://www.womendeservebetter.com/news/commonw.htm
Sheesh, Huck, no one brought abortion into this. If this goes off topic, into an abortion debate, I'll delete any OT posts.
