Thats a really cool idea....too bad my parents have been brainwashed into thinking that the most important thing in life is getting an amazing education and continuing onto grad school, and then working 7 days a week untill you die...as long as I'm under their roof they won't buy it. BUT there is a nationwide protest occuring on the 19th against the war...they are letting me go to the one in my area....
I agree completely with the position these folks are taking, it's just too bad it won't accomplish anything... Ouch, 7 days a week? What are they, workaholics? Seriously though, I hate to sound like the voice of reason but your parents aren't "brainwashed"-- it sounds to me like they just want you to have a certain set of tools to be "successful" in your endeavors. A bachelor's degree doesn't carry the weight it did 20 years ago, many professions are much more competitive now. I wouldn't be able to do what I enjoy doing for a living if I hadn't gone to grad school... I understand that you're young and more interested in what life has to offer you in the here & now rather than what's way down the road; a lot of young people were/are like that, myself included. That's cool. Have fun, go to protests and whatnot, explore what interests you but don't EVER knock a quality education-- even if you're not interested in a "straight" job, higher education can be a really tremendous blessing. Study something you love (as opposed to something that will simply provide you with a stable salary or please your parents) and you'll see what I mean. Sorry to sound like I'm lecturing, it's just my two bits...
Gnombient its just that focus of trying to find an easy way out of life. We all have it at one point or another. I think though that its cool to have challenges in life and the college environment can be an awesome one. High School sucks because people aren't there to grow, they are there to be because of the law. College is awesome, people pay to go there and the culture is very diverse. People have finished developing their brains and got a foundation. It's inspiring. Plus whats real cool about a further education is the people you meet could inspire you to do something that you would immensely enjoy. C'mon, we all need experience in life even if it isn't all fun and games. But to get back on track lol: I think the Walk Out would be a cute idea for myself if I wasn't on break already. Year round school really gets things warped. Maybe next year. Least I'll be able to say its for political games and not for drug use if I get questioned about the skipping.
I'm not knocking college or higher education at all....but they blow its importance and value waaay out of proportion. I got a B on my History exam and they flipped out. They have very high hopes for me after my (30 year old sister) graduated from Brown and now is the vice preisdent of this financial firm...and makes more money than them. I definetly want to go to college....I am looking way forward to it, but they have set such a high bar..and want me to go to ivy league like them, while I want to go to art school...I hope you understand... Apparently on that no work/school day, we have school olympics and only have classes from 8-11, the rest of the day we have to watch people hit around balls with their stomach and stuff their face with pie, and my parents are STILL making me attend!
