I sometimes think of dancing and sex as art. A lot of people disagree with me. A lot of opinions I get is that it is just an attention seeking performance, but isn't all performance art? maybe not all attention seeking, but I am wrong? Is sex and dancing art or just some sort of action that cannot be viewed as artistic and creative?
Dancing is a kind of art, just as music, theater, film, literature and even cooking are. It's unfortunate that the term "art" seems to have been appropriated by the visual arts disciplines (painting, drawing, sculpting, etc.), but dancing is definitely art. As far as the sex part of your question is concerned, I don't quite understand where you're coming from... Are you having sex in public and suggesting that it's art, rather than "indecent exposure" and "lewd & lascivious behavior"? Sex can certainly be creative, but I don't see how you're going to market sex "as art" to a public audience as anything but "performance art" (in which case be prepared to get slapped with the aforementioned charges) unless it's captured in another kind of media (i.e. sculpture, visual art, film, etc.); in any case you open up a whole new can of worms about subjectivity and taste; one person's trash is another's treasure, so to speak. IMHO the whole notion of "shock art" is played out; our culture's so desensitized now, but that's just my two bits...
Yes, however sex is only an art when is meant to be an art. Anything meant to be an art is an art, but sex in general isn't an art unless meant to be.
i see art as anything that comes from ones imagination and is externally portrayed through some means. the word comes from something like 'skill' or like specialised technique sorta thing from what i remember. latin. anyway sex can be an art, just like dancing can, but most men dont want to watch another man having sex to a woman, they want to have sex themselves. it would be a very hard art form to manipulate in a unique way since its something that is harder to convey through external portrayal. dancing is art if you make the dance yourself, dancing to someones coreography is not art (though copreographing is) jsut like playing an instrument in an orchestra. songwriting, improvising, thats art. so is various acting caus you have to create the character. some art has less imput into it creatively, like playing a highly directed character in a play or conducting an orchestra. so to determine how 'art' something is, i look at how much imput has been used from wahtever preset plans there are. how good the art is? thats a different question. this is only my interpretation for art. i think the measure of art is subjective. its really what values you relate to the word art. in general, people care how good something looks, and care less about the imput into things.
