I've never smoked pot before...and I guess one day I'd like to, but I was just wondering...What are the chances of developing a mental illness from marijuana? I've heard that it can really fuck you up...
damn girl at least look at the first five posts, if you cant be fucked searching the forum for such an obviosuly important subject
as far as your question goes, if someone in your kinship has a case, and even more so if muliple people have developed any psychological disease, be more wary, but you can try it and then judge the situation again afterwards. if no one in your family has been known to have psychological disease, then just go for it, and dont do it all the time if your worried
weed wont give you a metal illness but it could make worst one if you already have one like depression or skitsofrenia but not all the time, i have anxeity disorder and actuly it made it better for a long time untill i smoked with penomia which made me panic that i wont be able to breath when i smoke weed or that my lungs are so damaged i wont be able to live which i know is not true so next time i smoke im going to take some xanax frist weed realy isnt that bad for you actuly its the only drug that i will back 100%
Recreational drugs aren't the wisest idea for a person with a mental disorder, or someone who is at risk for developing one. But marijuana is probably the least likely to harm you. I've been smoking 3 or so times a day for a good while and I'm not crazy. But, I'm adopted, so I don't know my family's medical history. You'll be fine. If you feel like pot is fucking you up beyond just getting stoned quit smoking.
the cases of marijuana induced psychosis seem to be with those who smoke all day every day for a few years
let me make it clear. If you have a mental illness and smoke a lot, you could increase the mood swings or symptoms that you already have. If you don't MJ will not cause any mental illnesses, or physical illnesses, it can only develop psychological illnesses. People who think they are addicted, but really, MJ has no addicting qualities other than it's fun. Sometimes people get paranoid, another symptom that is all in your head. It varies from person to person. If you consider yourself a pretty mentally stabel person, then go ahead with out any fear. It can work the other way too. I, personally have severe mental stresses, that were once illnesses that I was treated, even hospitalized for. MJ has helped me clam down and think clearer. People can argue this point until they are blue in the face, but I know it has helped me get better beyond anything any doctor ever tried. I am a living statistic of someone who greatly benefits from MJ.
I'm going to use Neil Young as an example. He was always scared of MJ and rolled down the windows in his car when people smoked. He has a lot of genetic psychological problems and physical problems and his doctor said if he ever dropped LSD, he may never come back. And no, I don't really think you can't get mental illness from MJ. Unless you already had serious issues. I suppose only way you could really cause an illness in yourself is if you concentrate on thinking you're mentally ill until you believe it. Of course, this is just a theory. I'm actually a bit stoned right now...
'I suppose only way you could really cause an illness in yourself is if you concentrate on thinking you're mentally ill until you believe it.' Orsino2, this is actually quite true as i was told this by a mental health nurse. good theory! she explained also that thinking yourself mentally ill is not the same as actually having a mental illness (schizophrenia, psychosis et.c), so anyone spooning out that they're going mad get it checked out, and more than likely it is just media (and not cannabis) induced paranoia!
\ actuly i think concentrating on some thind thats not there untill you beleve it, would be an anxeity disorder or hypocondract which is a mental disorder, no? hmmmmmmmm..........
yeah, sorry i wasn't too clear, i just meant its very easy to convince yourself you are schizophronic (e.g) and that you can display symptoms by believing you have that illness. i'm not too good with words sometimes, arrrrggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
yer i think it mostly in the mind. but thinkning youve got a disease is jut as debilitating as having the disease, if youve thought yourself into it or not. if it wasnt bad then it wouldnt be an issue. im sure though that if the world wasnt so concerned on mental stability, and crazy people really were the crazy ones but were not given extra special care and drugs, then most of our problems would go away.
You should only try it, if its YOUR choice. Don't give it up to peer-presure.It does not cause any disease like that.
Like deadonceagain, i too have an anxiety disorder, but i have also dealt with depression... for me personally each time i smoke it is different, sometimes i feel complete euphoria, other times i feel uneasy and anxious, and slightly paranoid... but i agree with with everybody else, it cant CAUSE a mental illness, just perhaps worsen it, but most of the time not even that. only thing i can say is try it and see what it does to you and if you like it.
