Obviously plenty of the taxes that we pay are bull shit, but which one do you thing is the absolute worst?

I would have to vote for estate tax. I mean come on, how can a government rob the dead of their life long earnings which they already paid taxes on to begin with? I know in recent years there has been efforts to reduce these taxes, but in my opinion it should be eliminated all together. Doesn't it break the basic rules of Double Taxation or Taxation without representation?

    you dumbass.

this hardly only effects the rich kids.

they take estate taxes from EVERYONE who dies.

say you are a firefighter.you have a good pension and life-insurance plan. you die...the government will take a HUGE chunk of your life-insurance...leaving the widow and/or children very little left to settle your final affairs.

then they go ahead and continue taxing your pension.

my mother-in-law lost her husband who was a firefighter.he had a $150k life insurance payout.

the government took over half of that in taxes...AFTER he already paid taxes on that same policy.

not to mention the amount of taxes he paid during his working life.

    IT IS TOTAL BULLSHIT.

in the end..it screws the family of the departed.

he was lucky to have a good policy.

widows and widowers have actually lost their homes and cars due to this ridiculous and disrespectful tax.

they punish people for losing loved ones so that they can fund things like wars and Air Force One...and a new Mercedes for the state governor.

Nice assumptions, I was kidding. I don´t feel the need to always be intelligent, sometimes I might want to liven a slow thread up with some controversy. Some kid bursting with righteous pride generally takes a bite.

Taxes are necessary, they are why some countries that don´t spend most of it on the military actually recieve some social benefits from them. I don´t think this particular tax is necessary, but if more money was put into rebuilding the infrastructure of this country then I might be more inclined to support it.

Tax is a matter of what type of society you want.

Taxation -just how much is raised, who raises it and what it is spent on are the basis on which are built your vision of the society you live in.

There are those that believe in no government where people contribute goods and services because they see the need and act in the interest of the community. It is a great dream but until mankind matures I believe it will remain a dream.

So all modern societies have some form of government be it the tyrannical authority of a warlord or the elected representation of a liberal democracy.

The thing is a government without revenue cannot function, it has therefore been common for them to bring in some form of tax. It is also true that from the very first taxes there have been people bitching about them but equally true that there has been people demanding that their government do something about one thing or another.

Let us for example look at something like waste management in a financially unequal urban area.

In a pre-industrial and small community it is relatively easy for an individual to deal with rubbish. Most things in the pre-industrial society were biodegradable so it could be composted and used as fertiliser. This was also true of human waste, which was often used to fertilise the kitchen gardens around cities or was put untreated into rivers. As urban areas grow in size and non degradable products became common this becomes more difficult.

Direct payment to companies could take away waste but since these would be based on ability to pay some areas would be covered very well while others would have a limited or no service. This has caused health and other problem and odours and diseases do not recognise the wealth of those affected. The companies could charge those with more money to cover the cost of covering other areas or use their profits and this would be in the interests of the whole community, but that is not in the nature of an unregulated capitalist system. So since most companies are involved in the search of short-term profit, which means that if they are not regulated they can cause problems.

Such systems work usually until the health problems become too great or until the political system becomes more representative.

To organise waste management it has therefore been normal to bring in some form of government control and regulation, which means taxation.

It is at this point a person has to decide just how much are you willing to contribute to the good of the whole community and what type of community do they want to live in.

How much tax money do you give to these areas? How much regulation do you want?

Just how much water and sewage system cover do you give? Do you allow sewage to be used in agriculture? To what standard do you want the water cleaned? Do you use landfill or incinerators? Do you try and get the waste to make energy? Do you recycle?
