Sit quietly and do not move.
Your body will start to itch somewhere.
    Do not scratch it.
It will go away and the itch will move to somewhere else.
    Just watch the itch.
    Don't think about things.
Just pay attention to the itch.

    I play guitar.

I have met an amazingly small number of people for whom conventional meditation works. The way it works seems incombatable with a large proportion of the population and to be honest it's aiming high to hope you are one of those people. I know I will get a lot of disagreement on this, but what part of the population will that be coming from.

Anyway - I believe that each and every one of us has a gift that is unique to us and that is there to help us fulfill our mission on Earth. Personally I believe my mission is music and I have a talent for it. I think the most effective meditation is simply to hone your art.

    Blessings

Very good advice, Sebbi, but I also think people go into meditation expecting fast results. I am guilty of this myself sometimes, so I get discouraged and quit. I think people need to realize that maybe you're right, and meditation for most of us is going to be hard. But not ineffectual, I think. It will just take time to develop one's awareness, and to do that one needs discipline. I think THAT is one of the major things we lack in our society that leads to less success in meditation.

I close my eyes and concentrat on making every part of my body relaxed, starting at my toes and slowly working up to my head. Your body will start to feel numb in the relaxed placed. All the time i listen to my breathing and mindlessly watch the colours i can see through my eye lids.

I normally sit or lie on my bed while playing soothing music. Deep breathing helps me too, in through the nose, out through the mouth. Of course, I often send myself to sleep doing so, but, hey ;)

i start off with doing this 4-4-8 breathing thing. breathe in deeply four times, then hold it for four counts, then release for eight counts. i do this for a little while, then i do some soothing visualization techniques that i found online.

^i couldn't get the hyperlink to work, but if you type that in the search bar there's a bunch of techniques that are explained well.

I light a candle, sit on a couple of folded blankets, close my eyes and start to breathe. I inhale for 4 seconds, hold 3 seconds, then exhale. To keep my mind off random thoughts I say "artnam" (mantra backwards, say anything you want) over and over, in pace with my breathing. AFter awhile I space out not thinking about anything and when I open my eyes.... the world just seems different. Better.

ONce in awhile Ill think of funny stuff, like a monk dancing with a huge smile on his face, I start laughing, I must look wierd... sitting for 10-20 minutes then burst out laughing... I love it.

I do this three times a day: I lie down for 15 to 20 minutes a day and I don't move and I stay awake and don't fall asleep and just close my eyes and have my jaw open and just totally immerse my body in relaxation. It's fuckin great

Wow, trippin, strange to find you here after all this time..well said. I agree that there needs much patience in meditation. I do was guilty of giving it up when it didn't give immediate results. Until. now. Now, meditation works for me, I understand it, I understand the things around me. So give it time, as dissapointing as it is, meditation will not give you awe inspiring results after your first session. Give it time, breath, and patience..and your life will unfold.

I know one method that helps you keep focused, sit in front of a lit candle and watch the flame, keeping your mind completely clear.

i sit somewhere that makes me comfortable that day. it could be outside in the sun or under a tree in the shade or even in a dark room. if i'm not outside listening to nature i'll put on a meditation cd or my cool machine that water comes out of and makes a rain noise. then i make sure to sit up nice and straight, close my eyes and think about one thing over and over again in my mind. usually i'm just saying "ohm" to myself bc it helps me let go and relaxes me. a good tip my yoga teacher taught me is that you can technically relax and meditate better if you're putting a little stress on your body first. so do a bunch of vinyasa flows first or tense up all the muscles in your body for a few seconds and then let go. that's what works for me and everyone's different so i'm sure if you get some good tips from each post that you're into you'll find something that works for you. good luck and have fun!

Don't meditate, become aware of life. Being satisfied with life is meditation.
