    Shelter: the night sky (depending on weather), tent. You'll want a sleeping bag too

    Food: Canned foods, rice, oatmeal, dehydrated meals (more expensive). Stiff like that works, think about weight, how long it will last, and what you like. You'll also want a water treatment system, not sure which is better, filtration or iodine. I'd probably go with filtration myself.

    Money: Fruit picking if the season is right, otherwise, conserve what you got or get a real job :(

    I read on here a while ago a good idea, of taking vegetable oil of some kind and taking a teaspoonfull or three a few times a day for energy, not bad for a long haul, since it's cheap and energy packed. Make sure to get one low in saturated fat, and low in polyunsaturated fats (as those high in polys go rancid faster). Olive oil is a safe bet, I think.

    I'll post again if I think of anything else. I am also looking for advice on the same subject, so I hope this thread gets some good replies.

    EDIT: found this site (googled "backpacking tips"), seems to have some interesting stuff. I disagree about the coffee though, I'd stay away from caffeine, it's a diuretic and makes you burn more energy. http://www.journeywest.com/WB/pages/beginner.html

    while I'm not an expert on it, I am trying to get into more backpacking/travelling too.

    My advice would be to take short trips to start off with. You'll learn as you go. Also, you'll meet people who you can talk to, get a feel for, and trade ideas with, who are living that life. Head down to a hostel and see who you meet.

    if your talking backpack traveling or budget traveling .....you can stay in hostels and ultra cheap hotel/motels....you could even have a lite weight sleeping bag and stay in airports and such for free.....all depends on where you are...

    to get money you could find temp jobs as you go along ....or maybe sell a craft .....

    you can find alot of info on backpack travel on google.....

    Good info been posted here. Definitely.
    I'll add;
    six months a year I live out of a back pack.
    Pack it once, then go over it again and take out more, repeat three times,
    this is the hippie forum, and so many here will not blink at what i have to say because its everyday life in my circle, but i shit you not, two changes of clothes is the absolute minimum.
    lightweight and tightly packed sleeping bags cost an arm and a leg, but are worth it. they take up so much room. fuck all the useless REI shit. travel light.

    Pretty good info here from everyone. Thank you.

    Well, what about travelling via trailer? How would that work? i.e from one country to another. Would you need a specific kind of permit?
