is there a 'God' as such....any other ideas than if it feels good....do it....is it a widely practised religion.....i honestly have never heard pf it.....tell me more......... roly.xxx
I've only heard of the resorts but I did find a website with more info on it. http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Hedonism
This is my rough definition. I consider myself Atheistic by way of apathy. Even if there is a God, it doesn't matter to me, even if I know I'm going to hell, I wouldn't do anything about it. I think a lot of Hedonists feel the same. http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17750
It's all about the Epicurean lifestyle, I don't agree with hedonism, cos it'll always catch up on you.
I think the thing you dont understand saying things like "it'll catch up on you" is that it is not pure greed. You see, it is taking actions that you belive will increase the overall level of happyness, not only your own, So if practiced properly, sure you might take from others a little to give a lot to yourself, but also you would sacrifice of yourself if it would do more good to others, see?
No I don't, hedonism no matter how you dress it up is what leads to junkies and nervous shaking wrecks, sorry to be such a bore but everything in moderation, I led the hedonistic lifestyle for a few years and still do the odd weekend but it's not the way one would want to go.
I guess that depends on if you think doing whatever causes the most happyness means with or without planning for the long run. I supose if it means right at the minute then it will kick your ass pretty bad.
Thanks PeacheScreams!! that link was GREAT! just the direction I was meandering towards with my own thoughts... I find people in general think of Hedonism (and Anarchy, Satanism what have you) with a shallowness that comes from having 99% of our information delivered pre-digested by the LCD mass media. Hedonism, (haha) ALL DRESSED UP in that spiffy definition, covers just about EVERY human being...even those who disagree, on some level, are doing what feels good to them, right?
Nah uh! If you think about it, if you, say, were a heroin user because it felt good, you'd have to do it in major moderation (not really possible with heroin tho..) because in the end the not feeling good would outweigh the feeling good, so it's just not hedonism maaaaaaaaaan
moderation and enlightened self-interest are concepts of epicureanism, so not related to hedonism. hedonism is doing whatever provides sensual pleasure in the present, with no regard to the future, and really only works for nihilists.
i believe it was john mill, one of the most prominent people to expound on bentham's definitive psychologicla and ethical hedonism and utilitarianism, who said that; 1) hedonism does not displace the idea that there can and indeed IS a god, because god would WANT his creatures to be happy, and therefore, hedonism is the only correct way to follow god. 2) it's not just about quantity of good, but also quality, and thus the quality of goodness derived from something like "raising a family and being honest" would be higher than "taking 37 shots of tequilla" 3) it's not just the "good" for yourself that you must consider. it is the good of all sentient beings. which actually also includes animals. sounds like a good argument for vegetarianism to me 4) he also said he thought hedonism was above the human capacity to enjoy. it has to be perfectly executed to funciton properly, and i'd say that humans lack the foresight to really understand the good.
so you mean hedonism is good for the inner self, the soul. but in order for it to work you need to be honest with your soul and it's surprising how many people out there aren't.
Hedonism is like walking a tight rope.....you get the most out of it if you exercise the most control. If you can channel that pleasure-energy into constructive directions, then you can make this lifestyle last a lifetime.....
