my favorites from underground and mainstream-- afu ra, atmosphere, tribe called quest, beatnuts, Big L, d-block, dead prez, eminem, freeway, genius/gza(and the rest of the wu-tang clan for that matter...most notably Ghostface), Immortal Technique(peruvian cocaine is awesome with the scarface beat), jedi mind tricks, lil wayne, lost boyz, lox, mos def, nas, notorious big(no way you can't like him), shyne, souls of mischief, styles p, swollen members, xzibit, young gunz. yeah, shame me for not having a strictly underground taste...but party rap and mainstream shit is not the end of the world. people that hate it are just trying too hard to be cool for only listening to underground.
