Boy, does that ever sound familiar. I live in Phoenix. From May through September, I wouldn't dream of going barefoot between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Evenings are a barefooter's dream, though. You feel like the sidewalks are treating your feet to a heat massage.

It was nice in the evening, and nobody seemed uptight about bare feet.

    A bed of nails.

    i don't get 86'ed for barefootedness, nor shirtlessness ;)

i actually worry about folks and/or their children that are barefoot in public, 'cuz of the nursing thing and just knowing how vulnerable the largest organ of our body, namely our skin, is, to pretty much everything.

i did almost lose the end of one of my second toes, swimming in a river in Cali ~ stepped on a broken bottle. My Mom stuck the flapping-around piece back where it belonged, kissed it and made it better! (yeah, i'm one of those ~ The Power of Positive Thinking dudettes. What can i say? ;) )

Okay, so getting back to the topic at hand,

    A Public River

    is my "other" answer.

If you enjoy that, hop on a motorcycle and ride east of Phoenix, through the orange orchards. The temp will drop about 8°F, you'll be flying through shade, and the scent of the blooms is pure heaven... THAT, my friend, is how to live in Phoenix Metro (includes all, what, 16 "suburbs?").

Yeppers ~ been there, done that, and wouldn't UNdo it for anything!

Machine shops! I will not even wear flip flop there. Razor sharp metal all over the place. <(^o^)>

Let me guess: you did this in the month of March, right?

Many of the orchards in the East Valley have been cut down and built over, but you can still find ornamental orange trees all over Tempe. I wouldn't recommend eating the oranges, but they smell just fine.

And yes, Ohiodel, Phoenix is a super-casual city. As long as you're not dirty or dazed, you can go barefoot without anyone mistaking you for a derelict.

Some bicycle pedals are too sharp for even me to handle (and I can run across my gravel driveway!). Other than that, though, as if bicycling wasn't fun enough, bicycling while barefoot can be such a thrill!

    Hi Yummi,

you can replace the pedals easily. Usually they are srewed to the crank arms. There are cheap barefoot friendly pedal sets available in every bike shop i guess, and problably they will change them for you if you ask for (it needs about 2 minutes).

Yah snow does it for me to. I live on the east coast (PA/NJ) and man it sucks. When it snows or its just soooo cold out that it hurts your face or any other part of skin that shows it becomes impossible to do anything outside.
I cant wait until spring and summer. Its going to be so beautiful.

Walmart. I was not kicked out, but I got the standard, but inaccurate, response from the cashier that the health department would be all over them for letting me shop barefoot. She was polite about it and said she'd pretend she didn't even notice.

I would say, being barefoot in a pigpen isn't good. Though I've done it before. I probably deserved to get ringworm.

The ringworm fungus would more likely be found in a public shower. Like athlete's foot, ringworm thrives in warm, moist places such as shoes.

There are few diseases which transfer from pigs to humans; the majority are transmitted via eating pork.

The majority of zoonotic diseases are transmitted via either cuts or ingestion. Information on common zoonoses in agriculture may be found here and here.
