So I poured my first Beeswax candle.. i just did it in a 8oz mason jar.. was wondering why it cracked? it didn't effect the function of the candle.. but if we decide to give these out as gifts for christmas we'd prefer to try and make them look flawless btw.. if this matters at all.. added 1tsp of lavender oil to roughly 8 fl oz of beeswax
My first guess is temperature. If the glass is cool, and has tiny cracks or crazing, and the wax hits at full temp... Craaaaaack. Try the next pour with a pre-warmed jar.
yeap.. you may try pre-warming a jar. to maybe 200F. my experience in growing mushrooms shows me how temperature differentials will cause jars to crack... not to mention my experience in metallurgy. glass and steel behave somewhat similarly.
First off, I would really recommend getting some molds, they're not expensive and much simpler to use than a mason jar. If you're using beeswax, a simpler way would be to make dip-candles. They don't take much time, and you can do fun things like twist them. Or, you can make a "glow candle" - fill up a balloon with COLD water, make sure there isn't any air in it. Dip the balloon in the melted beeswax (in a double boiler of course) repeatedly. When you have the desire thickness, pop the balloon, and voila! Lovely beeswax glow candles. Another name for them are "Honey Pot" candles. Good luck! ~ Mama
I know the gifting time has come and gone, but by "it" do you mean the wax in th spout, or the jar? Since we all answered with the jar.
