I've been reading a lot into Buddhism the past few months. Hell I've even gone to the library and checked out many books. I've watched some movies and then read more books.

One thing I haven't thought about is what Buddhists think about 2012... Maybe it's a stupid question, but I'm interested.

Personally I don't think anything will happen. And if the world were to come to an end how would one go about living their life when they know the end is near?

I know all life must end but this really confuses me.

What do you guys think about this "apocalypse"?

The true apocalypse is when you dissolve the world into emptiness in your meditation.

Apocalypse/the end of the world has nothing to do with 2012.

But really what does the end of the world even mean. Does it mean the end of human life on the planet we call earth. or does it mean the complete destruction of the earth?

Either way, all it is is consciousness continuing and matter changing form. Nothing that isn't already inevitable and happening every day all around you. Both you, I and the earth will exist forever, but not necessarily in this form.

I know that we will exist forever but in different forms. But what will happen if every single living thing is killed at one point in time. Whether it be from 2012 (which it wont) or from another problem that kills everything.

Would the cycle of reincarnation end? Because I don't see how it could continue if everything dies.

When I was in Mcleodganj years ago, folks there were saying we had just moved into the 4th dimension and were about to enter the 5th.

    Whatever that means...

I thought there was always 4 dimensions.

the physical world as we know it may end but we will transcend into another dimension, for existence in every form is layered in dimensions, this is also where supernatural occurrences come from....ghosts are nothing but momentary perception of another level of existence, unfortunately we have been conditioned to believe otherwise...i believe that is the true purpose of life on this particular "planet" to un-condition ourselves and become aware of the multitudes of realms that we exist in.

Buddhism has no view on 2012 because it is just some date that's brought under our attention. What buddhists think of it probably differ as much as what individual christians, atheists etc. etc. think of it. :p
Too bad you called this thread 2012 if it was actually supposed to be about the buddhist view on the end of the world.

General relativity requires that there be at least that many to facilitate the so called field equations that mathematically describe the curvature of space-time.

Dec 12, 2012 is the end of the Mayan calendar. Its the oldest calendar we are aware of and for some reason, it stops counting Dec 12 2012. Keep in mind that the Mayans were extremely accurate with astrology, and their calendar was based of of this. Im not worried about it, just curious to see if anything really happens. I highly recommend doing some research on the Mayans.

    What do you mean "will"?

You will exist as long as you "want" to exist. In this world-system AND in any world-system. Existence is NOT forever ...

    Mind is chief ...

Cyclic existence continues, whether one world-system collapses and then expands anew, or another. Cyclic existence "ends" ONLY when all beings (in all world-systems) are free from Sankhara (mental volition), Avija (ignorance). One can think oneself free and still be bound to the thought of being free.

If one's actions perpetuate one's existence in a world-system in a state of collapse, then a different world-system will be acquired suitable for one's kamma.

Wiki: "Flat space string theories are 26-dimensional in the bosonic case, while superstring and M-theories turn out to involve 10 or 11 dimensions for flat solutions."

there is a simple solution of nine, of which we only see five, from any given perspective. this is only my belief however, from some previous life.

it seemed to work for the people there, though i'm a bit unsure what any of this has to do with either this thread or this forum.

i believe in strange fun interesting things and find them entirely sufficient as long as people don't hurt each other and don't leave big messes for each other to have to clean up after.

Although the calendar stops at 2012, there are other Mayan writings that speak of dates after 2012. It seems clear they never intended to give the impression the date has any real significance. I tend to think it is Western culture (which subconsciously is still deeply effected by Christian thought, for better or worse) which is curiously preoccupied with the destruction of civilization that places any significance on 2012.

They couldn't see the end of their own civilisation. Result - epic fail.
Nothing out of the ordinary will happen. Other than idiots running around saying the world will end.
