    Movie Blurb by Shale
    November 13, 2009

This movie wasn't a big hit with the professional reviewers, but even those criticizing it had to admit it had some good CGI moments. In fact that was the draw, which I have been watching in the trailers for months and which was put prominently on the posters.

    LA Sliding into the Pacific

So, I had to see this movie, not as a discerning 65-year-old man but tapped into those five 13-year-old boys within. It was exciting. Even when you know that the protagonist's family has to make it thru those scenes where the plane is taking off as the runway falls away behind it, or as the plane maneuvers thru the tumbling skyscrapers, it is still armrest-clenching exciting.

    Flying Thru the City

Here's the story. Turns out the Mayan calendar (Which many of us believe was made by advanced aliens) predicts the celestial line-up will tear this planet apart on the Solstice of 12-21-12. End Times, The Rapture, The Apocalypse, whatever, is finally upon us.

This has been confirmed by some scientists and the gov is making secret contingency plans but no one outside the limited circle knows about it. Until writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) who wrote a similar apocalyptic novel figures it out with the help of a free radio conspiracy theorist, Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson).

Jackson frantically rounds up his ex, Kate (Amanda Peet) their two kids and the ex's new squeeze Gordon (Tom McCarthy). This is where the excitement picks up as the world is falling apart around them and they try to make it out on cars, campers and a small plane, which luckily Gordon can fly.

Where Do You Go When Earth Implodes?

I don't like long movies and this one is 2 hours and 40 minutes. As usual, even I can see where it could've been tightened up a bit, mostly at the end when there was more dialogue than action. However, it did hold my interest even when whole major cities were not sliding into the ocean or chasms that opened around them.

I recommend this movie for those who like to go on a great cinema ride. If you enjoyed other apocalyptic movies like Deep Impact or Armageddon, this one is better. If you liked Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, you should know that Roland Emmerich directed them as well as this one.

I plan to get this on DVD to add to my earth destruction movies, but will likely go see it again on the big screen (which you should try to do also).

I wathched this movie on a poor quality bootleg so all the special effects were pretty lame, and the stroryline was weak. But the major flaw in the movie is how when the dad picks up his kids in a limo from there mothers home in California and takes them to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and made it seem like a short drive...

I just watched this movie, and while the special effects and the beginning explanation of what was happening was excellent, the rest of the movie was terrible. Some real stupidity in most of the storyline ruined this movie, along with all the predictable narrow escapes of the family.

Agreed, I was forced to the theater for this one... as we alternate movie picks when we go out, our last go around was for this and nearing the 3rd hour I wanted to pull my hair out... I realize that its just a movie and it doesn't have to be realistic to be enjoyable... I really do, but there are only so many times John Cusack and gang can really escape peril like that... just too much bang and not enough story.

I thought it was very odd that the Mayan calander only got a few mentions and the background was really not explored.

I get next pick so I promised him it would be the most independent film I could find lol...

This is a good point. What really got me is that most people in the movie didnt really know what was happening, and the government was trying to keep it a secret. In real life, if anyone has not yet heard of what could happen on 12/21/2012, then they have probably been living in a cave. If things start to happen on or around that day, I may be surprised, but I will know what is happening.

i thought this movie was absolutely terrible. the dialogue and storyline were awful. and besides that i dont give a flying hoot about special effects. no creativity at all, the acting roles were boring and bland as heck, and just way too damn cliche.
sorry if this is pessimistic, but in the light of things, i know a good movie from a bad one and this is a bad one. haha

i liked it just because a friend of mine pirated it and a bunch of us sat around and made snarky comments throughout the whole movie. It was a pretty fun time actually, but yes a terrible terrible movie haha

it had plot holes in it but i liked it. and, yes, it was the effects that hugely turned the scales. nothing wrong with that. not every movie has to be rational/logical and/or intellectually stimulating for me to enjoy it. sometimes an easy SFX-stuffed action movie can be very good. and this one was.

well i finally saw 2012. compaird to that other movie (2012:doomsday.)
this 2012 movie is fine art at it's best.
it was a 'nothing to write home about movie.'
i don't care to every view it again.
i have seen far, far, better 'end of the world' movies then 2012.

I am going to have to agree with the OP's assesment of this.

Not a quality classic by any means, ...but sometimes shit is worth watching for the CGI visuals alone, ...and I got a good feast of eye candy just like I expected upon reading the title.

Worth the watch imo if you can seperate the shit script and just purely indulge the visual feast for what it is.
