I watched VH1's 100 top one hit wonders of the 80s and I fell in love with this song. 80s were a lot of fun :2thumbsup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9whehyybLqU"]YouTube - Nena - 99 Luftballons 1984
The early 80s had some good new wave stuff. That tune for me is symbolic of the fear people had during the cold war era and the shear number of nuclear warheads. The movie WarGames in 1983 was along the same spirit as the tune 99 and it was released around the same time. A group of high school student in the U.S. in that era published their own book that cataloged the plethora of different types of nuclear weapons that the U.S. and Soviet Union had. Kind of pessimistic that there were so many weapons and that it was on the minds of youngsters so much that they devoted a book to it. .
In the more modern context, the first half of the video looks like she's walking around the smoggy oil refinery areas of New Jersey. The second half looks like the shock-and-awe bombing of Iraq. .

Hello, hm, no, I don't like the song very much. It's not that I switch the radio off if this song is played, but I don't like it. I find it more interesting that some german songs are such popular in the UK and the US. I've heard it even on AFN. In german language! There are a few other ones that I'm aware of. Johann Hoelzel, AKA Falco comes to mind. Why is that? Other german bards, like -oh dear Lord, forgive me- Heino are never heard of in overseas I guess. Regards Gyro
i remember the first time i heard that song. i was laying in the back of my mom's peach zephyr station wagon, moving to long beach. my brothers were asleep next to me. i had my feet up on the window and thought it was cool that i could fog up the window with my foot. i thought the moon was following us to california and i was glad. i was very small.
She probaly would not like to be tagged as that. I like the tune from time to time. http://www.nena.de/musikvideo/videos
